Windows 7 MAC Change
Hello, I'm looking at SMAC and wanted to ensure I had the ability to make sure it works fine prior to purchase. I have a new Windows 7 Home Premium laptop and the wireless NIC MAC begins with a '90'. Unfortunately, my Motorola router will not accept a 90 as a beginning MAC and Motorola offers no solutions (appears to be something in their javascript that won't take the number). So... I'm looking for something that spoofs the MAC without any connection performance related issues. Anyone know if this is this something that SMAC does well ??? So far, Motorola hasn't been much help and HP (laptop mfg) has only provided the process shown here and elsewhere on the net that does not work. I have an atheros wireless NIC and they were no help as well...
TIA for any help... :-)

coverland,
I believe you can actually change the MAC address within Windows 7, without buying any software. Try doing the following:
1. Open up Device Manager.
2. Go down to Network Adapters.
3. Select your network adapter and right click, select "Properties."
4. Click the "Advanced" tab.
5. Select "Network Address" from the list on the left.
6. Enter in a 12-digit "value."
7. Click OK, and you're done.
You can double check this solution by opening a Command Prompt windows and typing ipconfig /all. This will give you information on all of your PCs network adapters with, hopefully, you new MAC Address (labeled physical address). You can also change your MAC address through the registry, but I like to avoid doing too much with the registry. You can find more information here:

Hope that helps!

Doesn't work - thanks for the reply though. I also downloaded and tried SMAC. At least in the evaulation mode, it doesn't work either. Trying the methods (both methods) above hasn't gotten me anywhere other than the original MAC of 90-4C-E5-etc... I wish there was a way to swap MAC addresses between my wireless and wired connections. My wired connection MAC starts with the 00 that my router is willing to handle. Thanks

only a few nic allow you to change the MAC addy in win 7, and then it depends on the driver in use.But to the issue with the motorola and the MAC not allowed, this is strange as I have been setting up folks behind motorola UBRs / surfboardsfor ten plus years without ever seeing this...did someone at motorola UBRs / surfboards tell you this or is it something you assume.

Hi,
I also think it depends on whether the NIC support this.
In addition, I would like to share the following thread which is similar with this question with you for your reference:
How to change a MAC address on Windows 7
Hope this helps. Thanks.

Yep, got the word straight from Motorola tech support. There will be no new firmware changes coming out for this router and there's no way to drop the java to the extent where it's not stopping me from adding the MAC. That 90 starter just wouldn't work.

Yep and I'm thinking Atheros is a brand of NIC that doesn't allow MAC changes. I tried one piece of software and achieved a changed but that was following BSOD, etc so un-did everything back to normal. I wish you could move physical addresses within a computer because my hard wired NIC has a perfect MAC but this Atheros and starting with 90- has been a real pain in the backside.

for me to get things working I had to use older drivers for intel adapters. Here is an old driver that works on vista x64 and windows 7 x64 for intel wifi adapters.

there you can change ur mac to any address starting with 00, ect so that there arent any compability issues as well as conflicts with the router in connection.
