Windows 7 Permission Troubles
ok. I am about to pull my hair out! i keep getting permission errors. first it started with my Seagate Free Agent removable USB2 drive. The drive came formatted in NTFS, so it has permissions. I had been using the drive in Vista and had no problems with permissions, but it just seems to be getting progressively worse. Every time I have installed a new build of W7, i have gone into the security settings, changed ownership and updated permissions and auditing. It goes through changing the permissions, but after a few minutes i'll try to access a folder and it denies me access. I go into the securities tab and I'm there, but sometimes it doesn't change the status permanently. I have tried adding "everyone" with full access, but it doesn't help. i have tried sharing with everyone read and write. eventually i get the same result. Then, just as i am ready to convert the whole thing to FAT32, i start having issues in the c drive! I was trying to install an amd cpu driver and i started getting access denied to this folder messages. I have gotten access denied messages on items in my own downloads folder. Now I keep getting a message that the Recycle bin is corrupt. Windows seems to be confusing itself, because sometimes, when I look at the permissions it has my computer name/username and other times it has the registry's tag code for my profile. sometimes, it has "unknown profile" with the registry id for my profile. overall, i am really quite impressed with the new windows 7. it is much more stable and efficient than any other OS Microsoft has made, but this is really frustrating. I'm going to convert all or most of my terabyte removable to fat32, although that will limit my file sizes, but i don't really want to convert my c: drive. what ever happened to WinFS? I think now the noticeably week points for windows7 are the outdated file system and the sadly inadequate, unintuitive registry. it seems to me that the registry could be eliminated if smart tags were used for all files and folders. xml tags are much more flexible and adaptable. anyway, in the meantime, is there a way i can use powershell to wipe all the permissions on the whole drive and start over fresh? can i use the unix commands? i haven't gotten that much into powershell, but it seems like "terminal" in a unix based os. and i'd like to put in an order for a stable, intuitive solution [bugfix] for this security permissions nightmare. it seems I'm not the only one with fewer hairs due to this. ~steveo

Every time I have installed a new build of W7... These forums only support builds 7000 (w7 beta) and 7100 (official RC). If you are not using these builds, then you will have to ask your question somewhere else.Hello! Please try every solution given to your problem...and reply back with its results... - JoelbX
