Windows 7 Professional Firewall and Java/FTP
I have written several Java applications (.jar files, actually) that include an FTP client. They work on XP, they work on Vista Business, they work on Windows 7 Home Premium. However, they do NOT work on my new Windows 7 Professional (64 bit, service pack 1) machine. If I turn off Windows Firewall long enough to log on to the remote FTP server, it works just fine. In fact, I can turn the firewall back on and I can download and upload to my heart's content, until I need to log on again. The behavior is the same whether I attempt to use an 'active' or 'passive' FTP connection. I've tried adding exceptions to the Firewall list for both java.exe and javaw.exe, without satisfaction. What's different about Windows 7 Professional? And how can I get the desired behavior for my DELIVERABLE Java apps? (I can't ask my customers to turn off their firewalls)

I have more information about the above problem. I just discovered that I had been launching my Java applications using version 7 of the JRE, which I had downloaded as part of a Java Development Kit. When I downloaded and installed the "general release" standard version 6 (1.6_031), the programs began to work as expected. Evidently, it's not so much a Windows 7 as a Java 7 issue. I submit this information for possible interest to other Java users. Even so, if anyone has found a way to make Java 7 FTP play nicely with the Window 7 Firewall, I'd be delighted to hear it.

Hi , You can allow the application to communicate through Windows Firewall and clear the options of Block all incoming connections in the Turn Windows Firewall on or off. As this issue occurs is related to JAVA development, in order to get the answer effectively, it is recommended to post a new question in the MSDN forum for further discussion. The reason why we recommend posting appropriately is you will get the most qualified pool of respondents, and other partners who read the forums regularly can either share their knowledge or learn from your interaction with us. Thank you for your understanding. Best Regards, Tracy CaiTracy Cai TechNet Community Support
