Windows 7 RC: Build 7100. Whenever Control Panel is opened and i click one of the categories, Windows Explorer stops working.
I lookedinforums and posts and found that most people solve similar issues by searching for "*.cpl" files in the the System 32 folder, but none of them are causing a crash. There's one that causes "Windows Shell Common Dll" to stop working, which i think is my Realtek audio config. There's three of the exact one, and two cause the error. I tried deleting and get a denied dialogue.I also installed a Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 trial, and everything went smooth, but this is around the time i thought Control Panel screwed up, So I uninstalled Kaspersky and it still had the error. Next I tried a System Restore to when I'm sure this error wasn't occuring, but sure enough it still happened when I go into Control Panel and click any category. So I undid the restore.Iupdated Windows Vista toWindows 7 RC,2-3 days agoI believe, but that went smoothly as well, without theControl Panel error.I would like to have help as soon as possible.

First of all show all Control Panel Items sorted by name, click the Windows Orb (Start) > All Programs > Accessories and right-click Command Prompt, then Run as Administrator. Type dir %windir%\system32\*.cpl /on (note the two spaces) and press Enter. To determine the culprit, rename (one at a time) the Realtek items by typing ren c:\windows\system32\nnnn.cpl nnnn.old (where nnnn is the name of the file) and press Enter. Obviously, this procedure is reversible.

WellI guess that looks like it solved it. There was actually only 1, not 3. I renamed it to .OLD and it works... Would there be anything i need to do with the .OLD? Like update my sound driver and just delete the .OLD?Thank You Very Much

I wouldn't delete it yet, monitor it for a few days.If the sound is behaving itself, leave well alone.

nano134,You may want to use Kaspersky Technical Preview 8.0 for Windows 7 as KIS 2009 is not compatible with Win 7. Get it from this link. The problem with troubleshooting is that trouble shoots back.
