Windows 7 Search is unstable
I am trying to do a search for content on my c: drive as well as a network drive and everytime I search for content, windows explorer becomes unstable and has to restart. I tried everything to fix this problem with no luck. Not sure if anyone else is having this problem, but I have it on a couple of new installed PC's that I have. I told it to include content but it gets so far and then fails and restarts. error message I get in event viewer: Faulting application name: Explorer.EXE, version: 6.1.7600.16768, time stamp: 0x4d6878c3 Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 6.1.7600.16695, time stamp: 0x4cc7ab44 Exception code: 0xc0000374 Fault offset: 0x000c35e3 Faulting process id: 0x11b8 Faulting application start time: 0x01cc1aeb8369fe1b Faulting application path: C:\Windows\Explorer.EXE Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll Report Id: 5709930b-86e0-11e0-9d31-a4badbf556f5 Any help is appreciated.

Hi, Please temporarily disable the third party security programs and boot in Clean Boot to test this issue. Also, please use a free utility ShellExView to tract the cause file and disable the third party extension. 1) Download ShellExView v1.41 . Please Note: The third-party product discussed here is manufactured by a company that is independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability. 2) Right-click the "shexview.zip" file, select "Extract All", the Extraction Wizard will prompt. 3) Click Next, input "C:\ShellExView" (without the quotation marks) in the "Files will be extracted to this directory" textbox. 4) Click Next and click Finnish. 5) Open the "C:\ShellExView" folder and double-click the "shexview.exe" file. It will scan the registry for all the shell extensions. 6) Select all the non-Microsoft extensions in pink by press "Ctrl" in the keyboard. 7) Click the "Disable Selected Items" on the toolbar and click Yes. 8) Restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved. Thanks Sabrina, I tried your suggestions and I am able to search for content on the Local "C: Drive" without any problems now but am unable to search my "O: Drive" on my network. I get 1-2 reseults from the content and then windows explorer has to restart. I've included the event log again. Windows search is not support on network drives. you have to use federated search, which is enterprise solution anyway, please look at the article for work around http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Exploring-Windows-7s-New-Search-Features-Part3.html

Thanks for the info, unfortunately that workaround won't work for me as I need the users to keep their data on the network and not locally. I also found out that some users are able to search the network from their PC's and some can't. Any more help is appreciated.

Hi, Please check if the hotfix in the following KB article helps: Windows Explorer may crash randomly when the network discovery state is set to On in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2 Please check if it is able to open the mapped drive properly. Please remove this mapped drive and re-map it using another drive letter and then attempt search. Also, what about the result when you check the “Always available Offline” option and index the mapped drive folders. What happens if you access the share using UNC and then search for contents? Sabrina, Sorry for the late response as i was off. I downloaded the hotfix and Explorer still crashes when i try to content search in my user files on my network drive. I then made the folder offline available and the content search worked. Took the "Work Offline" off, back to just the network drive and it crashed. My user file is 426 MB big. I have another user with the same problem and her user file is 5.28 GB which I don't want locally. I don't want to save stuff locally which defeats the purpose of network drives. Thanks, Michael

Hi Michael, What happens if you access the share using UNC and then search for contents? Is it able to open the mapped drive properly? How about removing this mapped drive and re-mapping it using another drive letter and then attempt search? If the search is working for other shares/mapped drives, it indicate that the search service is working as expected, most likely an issue with the mapping. Hi Sabrina, I just tried using UNC and got about 30 items and explorer had to restart. Hi Michael, Most ntdll.dll errors result from a corrupt or damaged version of the ntdll.dll file itself, corrupt hardware drivers, or issues between Windows and other programs. Did you temporarily disable the third party security programs one by one to test this issue? Did you test this issue in the new computers? When did this issue occurs? Hi Sabrina, I temp. disabled the Symantec Endpoint and still did the same thing. Currently I only have the 1 user complaining about this issue. I don't search by content, so don't use that function. I looked further at the user file that she was searching and it only takes up 450MB so I am going to use the Offline Available feature. It does work whenI do that. I really don't want to waste anymore time on this issue and especially don't want to waste yours. I appreciate all that you have done and will continue to use the Available Offline to allow this user to search. Your quick response has been enjoyable. Thank you, Michael
