I have noted that windows 7 appears to have some issues when it comes to Tamil UNICODE rendering. I pariticpated a workshop at the Eastern University of Sri Lanka and one of the audience asked about rendering, so I post his question here where windows 7 Tamil uniciode rendering seems to buggy that need to fix. I have uploaded two files the first one which is buggy characters are circled in red via http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bug_unicodeProcessing.PNG and the other one is from window xp sp3 which is the correct one via http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tamil_UNICODE_rangavarisai.PNG please have look at it. Let me repeat the characters used in the file they are , , , , , , , , , , , , . I shall be thankful if this is fixed. If there is any issues please let me know. Hi Sabrina, I have downloaded and installed the windows 7 language pack but the problem persists while I haven't come across this issue in windows xp sp3. Due to lack of hardware I couldn't participate in the beta testing of windows 7 however service pack for windows 7 is on the way I shall be thankful if this could be fixed. In the work shop I used the built in transliterate tool provided at Tamil wikipedia site where the Tamil characters , I also repeated the setps in a windows xp sp3 machine where I have been notified by one of the audience that character looks different upon further inspection that not only but also characters , rendered incorrectly. I checked the inscript keyboard comes with the windows operating system but the result is same. I checked a book namely Thirukkural published in Tamil Nadu, India where they used characters , , as per windows XP SP3 and not like the way windows 7 shows. Tamil consists of 247 alphabets (excluding Grantha). Unfortunately UNICODE is stingy to allocate only 128 character which resulted in rendering the characters to display the Tamil letters. As there is no one to one mapping of the characters exists, softwares like Microsoft word countes letters of the Tamil UNICODE which may not be relevant to this bug. Tamil is classified as complex script by windows XP however this is subject to debate. Sir, I have exactly the same problem with Windows 7. It does not reproduce the Tamil (Latha) font variants: , and as they should be. The bent tip on the bottom should not be there in the above three variants of the font. I shall be grateful if Microsoft would solve this problem. It is a serious issue in using Microsoft Indic for Tamil language, in Windows 7. Robert B Grubh

Unfortunately, the problem continues till today, and it is not possible to type properly in Tamil using Windows 7. I had to go uninstall Windows 7 and go back to Windows XP in order to complete a project in Tamil language. I am sure the Microsoft have the capability to fix this flaw, which is sending out garbled Tamil especially when it comes to using the letters , and . It appears that Microsoft have failed to pay attention to this major issue. I request you to take this matter seriously and release a patch to fix this problem. Thank you. Robert B Grubh

I just opened up the tamil wikipedia link with Firefox and it rendered correctly as expected as for supporting tamil in Windows generally I can say its not in the set of language packs included with Window 7 Ultimate if you need tamil, use the XP mode and tamil language tools there Windows MVP 2011-12, XP, Vista, 7 and 8.
