Windows 7 and Intel 900GMA
Out of personal experience, I've used Windows 7 with my 3 year old laptop. Everything was fine except one thing... I've been experiencing crashes when trying to do anything with Windows Media Player, Windows Live Messenger 9, and Media Center. On a clean installation of Vista, I can do everything just fine. Listen to music, talk to people on WLM9, etc.. no crashes. I don't understand why these crashes happen. There's no warning.. it "just" happens. On Windows Experience, the crash happens when it's scoring my Windows Media decoding. Another person has posted on these forums using the same exact graphics card as I am, and has been experiencing the same problem. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/b873b9c3-89f2-418e-9aeb-fad15bfbeca8/^^That's the link to the post. Here are my specs.Dell Inspiron b130GPU: Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset FamilyRAM: 768MBCPU: Intel Celeron M 1.6GhzA person mentioned in the other topic that this could be related to resources running out. I'm wondering why this doesn't happen on Vista, then.EDIT:Allow me to add on, when the "crashes" happen.. nothing works. Mouse doesn't move, num lock doesn't work along with the keyboard. Even the power button doesn't respond or unless I have it held down for 10 seconds for it to forcefully turn off.

OK, what drivers do you use? because this chipset is not supported in Windows7 clean install, my another question is what sound card you have and what drivers do you use...Becuase there are two types of drivers the one from MS through update, which are Vista drivers and from Intel which are newer (from december 2008). The Vista drivers are horrible...dont use them..

My sound card is a Sigmatel 9200 and the drivers installed out of the box with Windows 7. For a while, I used the drivers from Windows Update(which were dated June 28, 2006) for my graphics card. Then, I went on Intel's site and downloaded the more up to date drivers. They're XP drivers, but seem to work better. I've noticed that the drivers from Windows Update fails to return the proper amount of VRAM my GPU has. It'll say there's 92MB, but really, there's 128MB of internal VRAM. The XP drivers report the right amount, though. EDIT: Out of curiosity, I ran the Windows Experience Index in command line. After leaving the computer alone for a half an hour, I come back to winsat crashing to "Running Media Foundation Playback Assessment v1.0.0.0 '-input C:\Windows\Performance\WinSAT\winsat.wmv -nopnp' ".I took note of the time the Windows Clock was reporting. It said 8:07 AM, when it was actually 8:33 AM. I've uploaded the event logs.http://www.mediafire.com/?ndxomm3m13bStrange how events took place even after the screen froze... EDIT #2:I seemed of found a workaround. Turning off hardware acceleration prevents the crash from happening. I was able to see the whole test throughout. Here's the output.

C:\Windows\system32>EDIT #3:Alright... accelerators seems like they don't have to be completely off. I turned it up to all but cursor and DirectX/DirectDraw accelerators to be turned on and everything was fine. As soon as I turned on the DirectX accelerators, though, my screen froze while watching the video. Sadly, there's a huugeee impact on the performance in terms of watching videos. Thankfully I can go about my business on Windows 7 without worrying about the damn thing crashing >__>. I hope Microsoft or Intel fixes the bug soon. Both XP and Vista work fine, so it's definitely something with DirectX11.
