Windows 7 and Roaming Profiles on SBS 2003 AD Network
Windows 7 Professional OS. Connected to SBS 2003 AD Domain network. Out of 23 roaming profiles, I can only get 1 users roaming profile to work. Every other user, when you log in with their AD domain account you receive this message about the "Windows Small Business Server 2003 w/ Service Pack 1 C:\Users\temp\AppData\Local\Temp\AppInchInstall.exe /s" tries to run, fails and you are logged in with a "Temporary Profile". All users are a member of a "Company" Domain Group which is a member of the Windows 7 Pro's local "Administrators Group" so they should have sufficient rights on the local machine. I even added some users to the SBS 2003 "Administrators Group" thinking that there was a permission issue there, but still Windows 7 would not pull down their "Roaming Profile". All the XP Professional machines are pulling the roaming profiles with no problem. The SBS 2003 Server is fully patched. I even ran the Widows Update on the server and there were no other patches to install. Yes, KB926505 is installed on the SBS 2003 server. I can find nothing regarding this "AppInchInstall.exe /s" nor am I getting anything relevant in the Event Viewer logs to help locate the answer. Why does only 1 user account pull its roaming profile while the remaining 22 accounts will not? Please, HELP! Thank you one and all for any and all input on this issue.

I recommand to you to post your problem in this forum because the problem is related to SBS not to Windows 7: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/smallbusinessserver/threads Best regards.

Authur - It is not working at all. Here is the latest information. I wanted to provide you and anyone else that can help, with more information on this issue of Windows 7 Professional joining SBS 2003 Domain network and getting the user(s) connected correctly and having their roaming profiles received to them. Yesterday, Friday 9-3-2010, I spent over 5 hours documenting and testing things so that I might be able to provide the correct information along with hopefully receiving a possible solution. I also verified that the SBS 2003 server has all the major patches and updates installed except for IE7 (it did not work) or the 4.0 search feature. I restored the Windows 7 Professional back to just a "Workgroup" workstation (not connected to any domain) along with cleaning up any residule user profiles located under "C:\Users" on the local machine (including the "C:\Users\_sbs_netsetup" profile) . All the workstations, all 23, are running Microsoft Office 2007. I have checked the one machine that did receive a roaming profile against the user that is not getting their roaming profile and both XP machines are patched with the latest patches. So the SP Professional machines are basically identical. Just wanted to let you know where we stand on the XP workstations the users are currently using. I then activated the "Local Administrator" account, logged on as that local administrator and setup so I could see all system files, hidden and any other way. I then checked the hidden "C:\Documents and Settings" folder to make sure that there were no profiles located in this hidden location. I joined the SBS 2003 domain using the local Administrator account on the Windows 7 machine plus during the "//servername/connectcomputer" wizard, I also included the domain users account and assigned it to this Windows 7 machine. When I created the workstation in SBS 2003 AD using the SBS wizard, under the "Workstation Configuration Wizard" where there is the "Client Applications", I went with the defaults again, since it seems it does not matter what options I check or uncheck, but here is what the default settings are ; -Client Operating System Service Packs, -Internet Explorer 6, -Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 (Service Pack 1), -Shared Fax Client. After the normal 2 reboots, the Windows 7 Professional was joined to the SBS 2003 domain. When I logged on as "Administrator" the SBS 2003 "SBS_LOGIN_SCRIPT.bat" ran, creating under the Windows 7's local hard drive the "C:\Users\_sbs_netsetup" profile" and successfully ran the "Applnch.exe Installer" for the "Administrator" account. While logged on as "Administrator" I made sure that the SBS 2003 Domain groups of "Company Users" group along with the "Administrators" were made members of the local Windows 7 "Administrators" group, giving the successful user loggon accounts rights to the local Windows 7 machine. Now, here is where the mess starts. When I go to logon as that user that has been assigned to this workstation through the "//servername/connectcomputer" wizard plus, they are a member of the SBS 2003 Domain "Company Users" group (which again is a member of the local Windows 7 "Adminstrators" group) the SBS 2003's "Applnch.exe Installer" can't run, therefore not creating the correct links to SBS 2003 and I receive only a "Temproray Profile" On the SBS 2003 server, where all the users home folders are located (which is also their roaming profile), I did notice a "username.V2 folder. I checked the permissions to this folder and none where assigned. I then even went as far as assigning all the correct permissions to that users new "username.V2 folder (Full Control). I shut down the Windows 7 machine, turned it back on and still, can't run the "Applnch.exe Installer" can't run, therefore not creating the correct links to SBS 2003 and I receive only a "Temproray Profile". So the questions are these : Why, a user provided all the correct permissions to the local machine, unable to run the "Applnch.exe Installer"? Why after assinging the user all the correct permissions to the newly created "username.V2 folder" on the SBS 2003 server where all the home folders are located, can't receive their roaming profiles from the users original location of their roaming profile on the SBS 2003 server of "username"? If I have to manually copy their roaming profile from the original "username" folder to the new "username.V2", I can do that. But that does not resolve why the SBS 2003 "Applnch.exe Installer" will not run. (the dialog box that keeps popping up when you log on as any user is the following ; Program Name : Windows Small Business Server 2003 with SP1 (the server actually has SP2) Verified Publisher : Microsoft Corporation File Origin : Hard Drive on This Computer Program Location : "C:\Users\temp\AppData\Local\Temp\ApplnchInstall.exe /s SERVERNAME" (that is not a miss-spelling on my part, that is the file name that this dialog box stated is ApplnchInstall.exe, which I think they mean Applnch.exe Installer) I hope that this is more information so that we can get this resolved. I also have the "SBSNetSetup.log", the "sbsmig.log", and the "SBSClientApps.log" if you would like to review them. If we can not get this resolved, then we will be forced to go back to XP Professional on all our new workstations that will be deploying in the next couple of months. I know that supposedly Windows 7 is compatible, but so far, I can not find an answer to this problem and moving to SBS 2008 is no option, staying with XP Professional is though. Please, HELP!!!! I don't mean to shout, but we are desparate and really need a solution that will work. Thanks again.

It seems that the startup scripts calls the Applnch.exe program on startup. Is that correct? If so, does it work if you do not include the startup script? In this case you’d better let us know the contents and purpose that are related to the Applnch.exe in the script so we can find which part will not run properly in Windows 7.

Arthur Xie - Thanks for the posting. The contents of the "SBS_Login_Script.bat" calls the following ; \\servername\Clients\Setup\setup.exe /s servername. It is this "setup.exe" for the clients that create the hooks in the clients OS for Exchange, MS Fax and the SBS company Intranet website. Now here is another kicker in all of this. This client "setup.exe" ran with no issues when I was logged onto Windows 7 as Administrator. It also ran with no issues logged onto Windows 7 as the local user account who is a member of the SBS "Administrators" group. Any and all other users, even though they are members of the SBS 2003 AD "Company Users" group and this "Company Users" group are members of the Windows 7's local "Administrators" group (just like the SBS AD "Administrators" group is a member of this same local "Administrators group), this client "setup.exe" which consists of the "Applnch.exe Installer" will not work on all the other 22 users accounts. I even went as far as adding the user that will be using this Windows 7 machine, to the SBS 2003 AD "Administrators" group and still, the client "setup.exe" did not fully run, causing the "temporary profile" issue. It is like if you are not an "Administrator", you have no rights or permissions to the local Windows 7 machine to do anything while connected to the SBS 2003 AD domain (again even though all authenticated users in AD are members of the SBS 2003 Group called "Company Users" and this AD group is also a member of Windows 7's local "Administrators" group). I even went as far as turning off the Windows 7 UAC, and that did not resolve anything. Again, thank you for your post and please, don't give up on me, I really need this resolved.

Hi, The application installation should be run by the command setup.exe. I suspect that there are permission issues on the server. You may refer the case in the following website. Please check related permission settings. SBS Client Application Launcher failure Important Note: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. This contact information may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this third-party contact information. Also you may check the log file C:\Program Files\MicrosoftWindows Small Business Server\Clients\SBSClientApps.log for more information. Additionally please let us know which applications are configured to be deployed to client computers by SBS. We should notice that some third party programs does not support this kind of installations. If you want to test, you may put the installation program in a shared folder. Then launch the *.exe file from another client computer. For certain applications you will receive errors. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Again, now I am looking at wiping out Windows 7 and replacing it with XP Professional. The time and the lack of reslolution to this issue, my client needs to move ahead on this and get this machine in place and it seems clear that Windows 7 is incompatible and the lack of support for issues is clear. I am still open to resolve the issue. I have provided the end user all permissions, including making them members of the SBS AD Administrators group and still can't get the SBS Client Application Launcher failure to install correctly. Thanks for your input and please, I am still all ears in getting this resolved, but my client is running out of patients.

From the log we can find that that the issue occurs when client computer tries to add printer/fax. Do you deploy printers or faxes to clients? Generally if the printers you installed are not compatible with Windows 7, the issue will occur. I suggest you remove the published printers and check the result. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Arthr Xie - Again, I thank you so very much for the post. As for the printers, all the printers that are on the network, Windows 7 installed automatically when I logged on as Adminstrator, no issues there. Windows 7 finds these printers on the network and installs them, the printers are not being pushed down using Active Directory, they are just on the network and Windows 7 installs them again with no problem. You did however mention "printer/fax" and the clients are using Microsoft Fax service that SBS 2003 is providing. That might be the issue but again, I need to stress here that everything was installed with no issue logged on as "Administrator" or logging on as the only user that is also a member of SBS 2003 "Administrators Group" in Active Directory. I would think that if the printers and the fax was incompatible with Windows 7, then I would have the same problem as these 2 accounts, but I don't. It is only when I loggon onto Windows 7 as an Active Directory User that I have this SBS 2003 client setup issue. Again, I have all users as members of the "Company Group" in Active Directory and this same "Company Group" is a member of the Windows 7's local "Administrators" group only, they are not a member of any other local group, just strictly the "Administrators" group. That is why I keep going back to there must be some registry hack or something in Windows 7 that is still keeping all the standard "Active Directory Users" accounts permissions locked or limited at the local machine but if you log on as Administrator or as the only user as the member of the SBS 2003 "Administrators" group, these two accounts are allowed more permissions to the local machine and the SBS 2003 client setup will run and install the Microsoft Fax. Please, keep posting and I again am desparate to find a solution. My client is now leaning towards dumping Windows 7 all together and sticking with XP Profession if this can not be resolved in a timely fashion.

Hi, From the log we can see that you configure to push the printers and faxes to client computers. Adding printer [\\WPA5\HP 4050 Letter Head] Adding printer [\\WPA5\HP 4100 Plain Paper] Adding printer [\\WPA5\HP4050Invoic] Adding printer [\\WPA5\HP4100Plain] Adding printer [\\WPA5\HPColorL] Adding printer [\\WPA5\HPColorL.2] Adding printer [\\WPA5\Minolta 600] Adding printer [\\WPA5\Dell Printer] Adding printer [\\WPA5\Reception] Adding printer [\\WPA5\HPMFPFax] Adding printer [\\WPA5\FaxRoom] The issue should be caused by certain of the printers that are not able to be added into Windows 7 client. I understand that it works with local administrator account and the domain administrator account, however we shall not confirm that this is a permission issue based on this. Maybe you should check permissions for these computers to see if only administrator accounts can access these printers. Also, some of the printers installed on SBS 2003 may be not compatible with Windows 7 because of different drivers. I suggest you download universal driver from Microsoft Update Catalog and install the printers on the server with these drivers. Microsoft Update Catalog Also please let us know if you are publishing applications from the server. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Arthur Xie - Again, thank you so very much for your assistance on this issue. I will check on those shared printers of the SBS 2003 server you have in question. I did go to Microsoft Update Catalog to see about that "universal driver" you mentioned and I found none for the listed printers. I will also remote in and check Windows 7 to see if it has the supported printer drivers already in the OS. I would think that it would, based upon that I am running older HP LaserJet 4, Samsug ML-1710 and even an Okidata ML-390 and Windows 7 has full support for those printers built into the OS but again, I will check on those printer drivers and see about driver support for them. As for published applications, we have none. The only application that is "pushed" is the "\\SBSserver\client\setup.exe" (but that is not a true statement since it is a .bat file being called from the logon script calling for the \\SBSserver\client\setup.exe to run). The SBS client setup again, is being called from the users logon script, it is not a "published application". I will again, check on those printer drivers and repost the SBSClientApps.log as soon as I can. Again, thank you so very much for your assistance on this. I really need a solution since the client is leaning on dumping Windows 7 deployment if this is not resolved in a timely fashion.

Arthur Xie - We updated the printer drivers and Windows 7 when I logged on as the client, those printers installed with no problem. Now, however, we are still back at square 1. The user only has a temporary profile. The SBS 2003 \\servername\client\setup.exe will not run. This still leads me to the conclusion that Windows 7, even though you are a member of the local "Administrators" group is blocking this client setup from running. I have also made a screen shot of the client setup dialog box that keeps popping up because Windows 7 will not allow it to run. Since I can not paste that image into this posting, if there is a way I can send it to you for your review, I would really appreciate it. It is because of this client setup dialog box that keeps popping up that leads me to the conclusion that we need some sort of registry hack that does provide that specific domain "Company Users" group full and unblocked "Administrators" rights to the entier Windows 7 machine. Hi, The event ID 6281 should not related to this issue. How do you push the startup script? I noticed that there are some drive mapping behaviors during the progress. I suggest you launch the startup script with the launchapp.wsf script. For more information please refer: Deploying Group Policy Using Windows Vista The launchapp.wsf solution is also applied for Windows 7. Hope it helps. If it does not work either, you may send the screenshots into your SkyDrive and I will view the pictures there. Use SkyDrive to upload collected files and post screen shot/picturePlease remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Arthur Xie - Again, thank you so very much with hanging in there with me on this. The startup script, is the default SBS 2003 script called "SBS_LOGIN_SCRIPT.bat" that is called from within every users profile. When you right click a user and select "Properties" and on the "Profile" tab, there is the heading of "User Profile" and under this heading there is a line called "Login Script" this is where the script is called from. It is this SBS_LOGIN_SCRIPT.bat that calls for the infamos \\servername\client\setup.exe where we are having the permission/rights issue where this setup.exe will not run on Windows 7 locally for the users. Until we resolve this client\setup.exe permission/rights issue, everything else will not function. Once we get this client setup.exe to run successfully, then everthing else will run. Is there a registry hack in Windows 7 that will allow anything and everything to run automatically elevated as "Administrator"? Now, how do I post my print screen of the \\servername\client\setup.exe dialog box that I took in SkyDrive so you can see it? I use SkyDrive when I am transfering images and logs and files, like I am doing on this SBS 2003 server issue, but I do it to be secured non-public folder. How do I post it so that you can take a look at this print screen? Let me know and I will post it for you and again, thank you so very much.

It is obvious that you are more qualified than I am on this issue, but I would like to offer the following even though it may acquire me some rebuke for posting: Have you tried adding a username (other than the SBS domain Administrator) to the Windows 7 machine and make it a member of the built-in Administrators group before having that user log on? I know that is not very efficient administration of adding many workstations/users, but it may let you know whether or not the process of adding the SBS 2003 Domain "Company Users" to your local Administrator's group is tripping you up. I have a Windows 7 Ultimate machine that I connected to SBS 2003 in much of the same manner as you have described above, but I entered each user individually. I eventually made each user a member of the built-in Administrator's group so that each user could approve the running of setup.exe upon log-on, but I was even able to connect new users when they were added to the Windows 7 machine as standard users. I just had to enter administrator credentials when the Account Control Settings caught the program (setup.exe) making changes and provided notification. Side Note: When a user, other than the domain Administrator account, logs on to the SBS network through the Windows 7 machine they will need local Administrator rights each time to allow setup.exe to run (even if you turn off ACS notification), so making them a local Administrator would appear to be the only way to go.

sqeakywalk - Thanks for your posting. Yes I did add the individual user account to the local Windows 7's "Administrators" group, tried a couple other users too and same problem. I am not receiving anything that allows me to run the \\servername\client\setup.exe with administrator credentials. If it did, I would run as the SBS adminstrator to see if that would allow the setup to run. All I get is the UAC dialog box popping up wanting to run "C:\Users\TEMP\AppData\Local\Temp\ApplnchInstall.exe" /s servername and that fails. At no time, do I get the option to run this setup with "Administrator credentials". When I logged on as Administrator, this "C:\Users\TEMP\AppData\Local\Temp\ApplnchInstall.exe" /s servername ran without any issue. Again, I am all ears and willing to try anything. My client is frustrated that Windows 7 is not as compatible as was hyped and now they are worring about other applications that might not function on this OS. They are getting ready to replace 23 machines and if Windows 7 will not function, especially with this issue of not even running a Microsoft setup, then they are talking about sticking with XP Professional. There has to be a registry hack that just gives anyone that logs onto Windows 7 full and unobstructed "Adminstrator" rights/permissions to the local machine. Thanks for any and all input on this, I really appreciate it.

Arthur Xie - I have posted the screen shot of the SBS 2003 dialog box on SkyDrive as you have requested. Please take a look at it as soon as possible so I can take it off there. Thanks again.

Hello - Is there anyone out there that has a solution to this problem? My client is getting very upset that Windows 7 is not "compatible" as advertised and is on me to rip it out and put XP Professional back on. I was hoping that I would be receiving more postings, but with no more responses, I take it that Windows 7 is a bust, not designed to be as backward compatible as we were told and that XP is still the best platform out there (unless you totally rip out all of your working infrastructure that is still supported by Microsoft and install the latest, greatest server OS that Microsoft has. but why would we risk that? Risk that our existing softwares would probably not run on the latest and greatest MS server OS because, I we now see with Windows 7, that argument about being backward compatible, only applies to the latest stuff from Microsoft and not their previous working and supported stuff). I am deeply disappointed that I am left out here, twisting in the wind.

For your Review ; Here is the screen shot of the dialog box that the SBS 2003 \\servername\client\setup.exe runs and it is this path indicated in the dialog box where we are having permission/rights issue with Windows 7, even though all the users of the domain are members of the Windows 7 local "Administrators" group ; Again, I really appreciate any and all postings to help resolve this issue. Thanks.

Hi Mike, Perhaps the last post in this thread will make sense and the reference to the article in a previous post. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproinstall/thread/aac3faa7-75f1-4674-8621-027f8d8eb049

Nano Warp - Thank you so much for your reply. I have read the paper web posting. This is addressing a "Mandatory Profile". Here are the two Event Viewer Logs that are created when the domain user account tries to log onto the Windows 7 machine (remember, all users within the domain are members of the Windows 7's local "Administrators" group. THIS IS THE FIRST LOG CREATED ; Log Name: Application Source: Microsoft-Windows-User Profiles Service Date: 9/28/2010 1:36:24 PM Event ID: 1526 Task Category: None Level: Error Keywords: User: SERVERNAME\USER Computer: 505-company.domain.local Description: Windows could not load your roaming profile and is attempting to log you on with your local profile. Changes to the profile will not be copied to the server when you log off. Windows could not load your profile because a server copy of the profile folder already exists that does not have the correct security. Either the current user or the Administrators group must be the owner of the folder. HERE IS THE SECOND LOG CREATED ; Log Name: Application Source: Microsoft-Windows-User Profiles Service Date: 9/28/2010 1:36:24 PM Event ID: 1511 Task Category: None Level: Error Keywords: User: SERVERNAME\USER Computer: 505-company.domain.local Description: Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off. Please don't take the capitals as yelling. I am using them to separate the 2 application logs that are created when the domain user account logs on. Again, I am begging for input on coming up with a solution to get Windows 7 Professional to work with SBS 2003. Thank you all for any and all input on this.

Hello - Is there anyone out there that can help me???????

You know something, I have read through the "Managing Roaming User Data Development Guide" for Windowss Vista that everyone keeps pointing to. Here is the darn problem, which everyone does not get ; page 27 in the guide starts out by having you log on as a domain user account, create a temp environment and log off. This is supposed to create, on the local Windows 7 machine, a local user profile. HERE IS THE PROBLEM : NO PROFILE GETS CREATED BECAUSE WHEN YOU LOG ON, YOU ONLY GET A TEMPOROARY PROFILE AS A DOMAIN USER AND NO PROFILE GETS CREATED TO THE LOCAL WINDOWS MACHINE. Again, all domain users are members of the Windows 7's local ADMINISTRATORS group. I have been fighting this thing since August. After today, if I there is no resolution posted, then Windows 7 backward compatability is a lie. We can't afford to spend 3-7 hours per machine to try to get Windows 7 to work with SBS 2003. Times that by 24 machines. Is Microsoft going to reimburse us our costs to get THEIR OS to work? An OS that THEY bragged is more backward compatible than Vista? Since know one can provide us with a solution, after today, Windows 7 is scrapped, XP will be purchased and installed on all new machines being purchased. That also means that all the big OEM machine manufacurers, like Dell, our out of the picture for machine purchases.

Sorry this may be to late BUT I have had the same issue on my domain when I mixed XP with W7 the roaming profile just went boom. After some research I was able to get an establish peace plan operation. W7 and XP do not like roaming profiles when both are living in the same domain the solution that I came up with was REDIRECTED folders. I have 3 main redirected folders located in a central file server share. START MENU = every user has a fixed start menu now. DESKTOP = every user has a fixed desktop now. APPDATA = THIS IS A MUST to allow apps to follow the user around e.g outlook, Adobe the Start Menu and desktop are optional but the APPDATA is a must. These Folders work with XP and W7 and sort out 95% of my roaming profile issue combined with GPO's I have a functional hotswap domain.
