Windows 7 and URL address
We have a number of Windows 7 machines (edition and professional). When we try to access a URL with .local in the name
http://xxx.xxx.xxx.local/ it gives a "webpage not found" message. The URL does work with Windows XP. When we use the IP address of the webpage on the Windows 7 machines, we also get "webpage
not found message". We have added the IP address and the FQDN to the host file, and it does work without issue, but is there some security setting in windows 7 that add without having to add this to everyone's host file. Any ideas?

Have you tried creating an "A" record in DNS.
That should work for both XP and Windows 7.

We have an Alias already. Does it have to be an A record?

I am not sure that i can answer this question. (i don't know for sure)
I can only give you my preference which is an "A" record.
You can have alias as well but only after you create an "A" record. Alias should be used in addition to “A” record and not solo by itself but that’s my understanding
of it. (it doesn’t mean I am right)

Hi,
You can use unlookup to check if there’s a record on your DNS server:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/200525
Also you can
try to register DNS via command:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
