Windows 7 and VPN not safe?
When i remote (Teamviewer, ISL or whatever) install VPN from our office on a Windows 7 home user (Home and Professional), i can start the VPN and then the RDP without problem. So the connection to internet stays alive, Outlook local works and there is a tunnel to our office. Is that normal? Is is still safe? or is it a bug. rgds Frans

Hi Frans, I would like to confirm if the issue is that after connecting to VPN, the internet connection is still activate? If this is the situation, please check if you have change the settings mentioned in this knowledge base (KB) article: You Cannot Connect to the Internet After You Connect to a VPN Server Hope this helps. fjvanham, This is normal this is option you can turn off or on in your network adapter settings. The option/feature calls "split tunneling" the cable guy has an excellent article on this. You can find it here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb878117.aspx You can turn this off or on by go into the properties screen of your network adapter. Step #10 on this site http://www.stevens.edu/itwiki/w/index.php/VPN_on_Windows_7_-_Split_Tunneling tells you where you can find the "Use Default gateway on remote network" option witch enables or disables split tunneling. See this blog article from the RRAS team... http://blogs.technet.com/rrasblog/ [...] rrors.aspx More than likely the XP box is behind a firewall/router that is not passing GRE Protocol 47 traffic. You can test the PPTP VPN link by running the test detailed in the PPTP Ping and VPN traffic secitons on this page. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us [...] 77965.aspx Grap the pptpsrv.exe and pptpclnt.exe programs off the internet or from a XP SP2 CD. If the tests fail work arounds include... * Upgrading the router firmware to a version known to pass GRE Protocol 47 traffic. * Flashing the router, if supported, with third-party firmware like DD-WRT that supports passing GRE Protocol 47 traffic. * Purchasing a router known to pass GRE Protocol traffic. * Use an alternative like Secure Shell [SSH] and a free SFTP client like WinSCP or Tunnelier for secure remote access to files and folders or Remote Desktop access/control of PCs on the office LAN.
