Windows 7 cannot access my File Server
Hi Everyone, I am running a linux file server which is on the same network as my Windows 7 machine. I could able to get the right IP address and DNS setting from my server. I could able to ping my file server with ip address and also by its name. when I try to connect to my file server through my windows explorer (\\<servername or \\<ip-address>), I couldn't connect to my file server. I tried to connect through its name and also through its IP address, both doesn't work. Could anyone help me with this issue?? Thank you Siva Siva

First, try the easy check: Open Control panel -> Credential manager and see if you have any stored credentials for the linux share. If so, delete it and try again. If that doesn't do the trick, try the procedure from this blog: http://www.builderau.com.au/blogs/codemonkeybusiness/viewblogpost.htm?p=339270746. It is originally for Vista, but the same will work for Win7. I am not a linux-man, but I believe there are also server side appoaches to this problem. Upgrading/configuring Samba on the linux file server to a version that supports the native Win7 settings would probably be the preferred and most secure approach.

Hi Eirik, Thanks for your reply. I checked the credential manager for saved user id's and passwords I couldn't find any credentials saved on the vault. I checked the blog you sent me. Since the user is using windows 7 home premium secpol.msc doesn't work. It is not on the linux side for sure coz the problem is only with this computer. Any other idea would be appreciated. I tried netbios over TCP/IP, no luck:( ThankYou SivaSiva

Hi Eirik, I found the solution for this issue. The Network adpater on the machine was not installed with "Clients for Microsoft Networks" which made the server undiscoverable for the client. Once I installed and restared the machine, I could connect to the server. Thanks SivaSiva

What version of SAMBA are you using? Due to the increased security of Window authentication, you must be running 3.5.x or later.
