I bought my computer with Windows 7 already installed (from factory) and after I sent my computer in for motherboard repair, it says it is not genuine. How do I fix this? activate the license again. the license key would be on the top of the CD given by the vendor. to activate license right click the my-computer icon and go to properties .you can see a link as activate license or change product key at the bottom of that windows.

I tried, all i found were two disks with what looked to be product keys, they said driver and utility on them. but when I went to enter in the "product keys" they have "Unacceptable characters".

I did what you said, I looked though all the things that came with my computer, i found 2 disks that came with it, they both have Driver and Utility on them and what looks to be a product key on them, ones for windows and windows xp. I entered in the products keys but my computer wouldnt accept it because they have "unacceptable characters".

Have you replaced any hardware, or reinstalled Windows 7? It is possible that Windows 7's Licensing Store may be corrupt or unreadable. Try the below steps to recreate the Store. 1) Open an Internet Browser 2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar. 3) Find the file CMD.exe 4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator' 5) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes) Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok. 6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform 7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar 8) Type: cd %windir%\system32 9) Type: net start sppsvc 10) Type: slui.exe 11) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically. If you have a product key, then you can reactivate Windows 7. 1. Click the Start button 2. Type: slui.exe 3 and hit the Enter key 3. Type in the Product key from the sticker on your computer 4. Click the Next button. 5. You will be asked if want to Activate, click ok You can also activate by phone by following these steps: 1. Click the Start button 2. Type: slui.exe 4 and hit the Enter key 3. Select your location in the drop down menu and click the Next button 4. The next screen provides the number to call to Activate by Phone

Hi, Based on your description, Im afraid that your motherboard has been replaced so that your Windows needs to be re-activated. Therefore, it is recommended to contact your computers manufacturer for help. Hope this helps. Jeremy Wu TechNet Community Support
