Windows 7 screen saver, password protection and sleep mode
We have a new Dell Inspiron 620 with Windows 7 Home Premium. It's primary use is as the work computer for the home office. We get data sent remotely from the business main site to QuickBooks on this computer. We were having trouble integrating when no one was in the home office. The setup was as follows: Windows - Password Protected Screen saver - on with 'On resume, display logon screen' selected Power settings - Sleep mode after 15 minutes First, unchecked 'On resume, display logon screen' - no change Second, Power settings - changed Sleep mode to 'Never' - Problem solved! Integration problem, that is. The reason we had the screen save set to resume with the logon screen because there were children who had no business using the computer using it. The question is, even though we have the Power Settings set to never sleep, if we re-establish the Screen Saver to display the logon screen when resuming WILL THE COMPUTER AT SOME POINT IN THE PROCESS SLEEP? Obviously when the computer was sleeping the internet connection was interrupted. I discovered that when resuming from the screen saver and one of the desktop widgets that displayed local time and temp said "Not connected to the internet" We need the computer secured from prying/playing eyes but also need to have it remotely accessed when no one is home. Thanks, Mike

Hi, Screen Saver will not put your computer into Sleep Mode. A screen saver is a moving picture or pattern that appears on your computer screen when you haven't used the mouse or keyboard for a specified period of time. Screen savers were originally used to save older, monochromatic monitors from damage, but now they're mainly a way to personalize your computer or enhance its security by offering password protection. More information: Turn your screen saver on or off Sleep and hibernation: frequently asked questions Hope this helps. Jeremy Wu TechNet Community Support
