Windows 7 search fails to find strings in .xml files.
Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me with a solution to what seems to be a very simple problem. I have Windows 7 RC (32bit) installed. I am attempting to search the contents of several .xml files for a specific string, the word Transparent. I know that several files contain this word, I can open the files with notepad and do 'Find' and find the word. However, windows search completely fails to return any files if I try to search. I do not want to have to manually open each and every file and search with notepad. I do not understand why Search is failing. I have confirmed the folders containing these files are in the index. Any help/suggestions appreciated.

I found out lots, thanks to your post, it's very interesting. I found out for example that the word "registry" can be found in lots of xml files located in windows\winsxs, but not "anyboolean", which happens to also be there. Reading vague long-winded articles, it seems to some people's satisfaction, that only certain things in XML files can be searched. I know I'm wrong (I have to be), but at least windows search seems to bear this out. More specifically, an attribute might not be found but text would be ("this would"). Unless the attribute is specifically declared searchable. Then I figured Joe MVP will fly in with the definitive answer so why go further, but I hope I was at least close.

Hi,don't want to interrupt you, but I think an answer to this is more likely to be found when posting on the MSDN forums.Ciao,Sabine---Just a HP Mini Netbook running Windows 7 RC ---

I found a website that seems to have what you need, http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cpp/XMLsearch.aspx, . The author suggests "a simple text search" is all you need, but since this was tried already, you might like his solution. My solution is to copy all the XML files into an empty folder. Then rename all the xml files in the new folder to "*.txt".Then search works on anything in the file. The only other solution I found is lacking a link, although I know one exists. The search engine uses filters to search, based upon the file extension. You would need to download a filter that suits your xml searching needs. The "Microsoft search filter pack" isn't what I was looking for, but it proves I looked.
