Windows 7 shared folder becomes inaccessible
Windows Server 2003 Active Directory domain. We have a Windows 7 Pro SP1 machine that we want to share a folder on. Got the share all setup and everything works fine for a while but then for unknown reason(s) we are suddenly unable to access it. The error is: System error 58 has occurred. The specified server cannot perform the requested operation. Followed by: You may not have permissions on the folder. Check with your system administrator. (That would be me ;-). Of course I, and the other user trying to access the share, are both Domain Admins, and Domain Admins is a member of the Administrator's group on the W7 machine. The machines we are trying to map the folder from are (2) XP Pro SP3 and (1) Server 2003 SP2. All of the latest updates have been applied to all machines. No events have been written to the event log of any of the machines. Rebooting the W7 machine makes the folder accessible again until it decides to drop again. It is very random; sometimes we haven't accessed it for a while, but on at least one occasion I had just accessed it from the 2K3 machine and one second later was unable to access it from XP, or any other machine.Da Bomb

Hi, Please boot the Windows 7 SP1 in Clean Boot to determine whether the 3rd software cause this issue. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796 Also, please disable the anti-virus and firewall on this computer. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Network Policy settings prevent Windows Firewall from starting on any machines on our network. I have verified this is the case with this machine. I cannot disable the anti-virus because the user would no longer be able to use the machine, this would be an unacceptable security risk. We are using Trend Micro Worry-Free Business Security. But I don't see how either the firewall or anti-virus would cause an intermittent problem; wouldn't they prevent it from working at all? Also, a Google search found dozens of other people with this exact same issue.Da Bomb

Hi, This error message points to RPC. The Remote Procedure Call Protocol Extensions, as specified in [MS-RPCE], define an RPC over SMB Protocol or SMB 2 Protocol sequence that can use SMB 2 Protocol named pipes as its underlying transport. The selection of protocol is based on client behavior during negotiation. This is most likely caused by the 3rd party software, so please boot in Clean Boot or Safe Mode with Networking for a test. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
