Windows 7 shuts off with no warning
I've been running Windows 7 on a new laptop since July. It's worked great up until a couple of weeks ago. All of a sudden, the laptop just shuts off. No warning, no blue screen, the things just goes dead. I can start it right back up and it works fine. This will happen completely randomly. Sometimes the laptop stays up for days, other times it will shut off several times in a few hours. This is Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 running on an Asus Intel i5 laptop. I'm not sure what info is relevant, or where to look for logs or any other debug info, so please let me know what is needed and I will provide any more info that I can. Thanks Sebastian

I actually just finished running 'sfc /scannow' and it returned with: Beginning system scan. This process will take some time. Beginning verification phase of system scan. Verification 100% complete. Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log There is a lot of stuff in that log, so I don't know if I should just post a snippet or the whole thing.

Sounds like a hardware issue, very likely the battery is the problem. Try running the laptop without the battery for a while and if the problem doesnt reoccur and you are still within warranty, report it to your reseller or Asus warranty for a new battery. Most laptop manufacturers only offer 1 year warranty on the battery. The corrupt files the scan found are likely caused by the hardware malfunction, so just a symptom and not the cause of the problem.

So we've had the battery out since Dec 1st. There were no shut downs until today. Today, there were two occurrences of the shut down. In both cases, MS Word was being used. Could the MS installation be corrupted somehow, and how can I check for that? Thanks

Scratch that, it's been happening with Word not running as well. I guess what I'm looking for is a simple way to tell if this is hardware or software.

Try running the hardware diagnostics from the BIOS/boot. I am not familiar enough with ASUS to tell you how to do this, however its right after turning on the computer, usually by pressing one of the Function keys, it will allow you to access the BIOS and then the hardware diagnostics from there. Sometimes its from the "boot menu" you access the hardware diagnostics as well. If you cant find it, log a support ticket with Asus, your laptop should be in warranty since its new and they will then most likely advise you to run the hardware diagnostics as the first step and they will be able to tell you how to launch that exactly. If nothing is found in that diagnostics, its possible they wont take ownership of the problem and you will need to troubleshoot your Windows installation. If you do find something during the hardware diagnostics, just talk to Asus warranty support and they will get your laptop sorted one way or another. Just be careful sending your laptop to them if its deemed a hardware issue under warranty, you might want to try and save off your files somewhere else first if you have some important files not stored elsewhere, as they will likely reinstall Windows. Good luck!
