Windows 7 with legacy hardware
I noticed that I'm able to run Windows 7 in a Mini-ITX build with an Intel Atom CPU and 2GB of RAM and embedded graphics. I'm wondering if I'll be able to run Windows 7 in an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual 3800+ 2.00 GHz with 3GB of RAM on an Asus A8S-X motherboard and an NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card. I tried Vista Home Premium (prior to service pack 1) in this rig and couldn't get it to work. It froze consistently. Has anyone ran Windows 7 on a similar system, or is there a compatibility testing site for Windows 7?Thanks

Hi _irobot_: I think you will find that Win7 will work quite well with your hardware. The Vista problems you experienced were likely caused by the NVIDIA graphics drivers at the time Vista came out. It took a lot of upgrades to the drivers before the frequent freezes & other graphics related problems were solved by later drivers. I have an NVIDIA 7600GT in this PC and Win7 installed easily and utilized the NVIDIA drivers built-into Win7. Your CPU and RAM are also easily adequate to run Win7. If you have a copy of the Beta version of Win7 already....give it a try, you'll love it!

Thanks newnerd, I do have a copy of Windows 7 and will give it a try. I had a feeling that it was the NVIDIA drivers, but wasn't sure since NVIDIA in general has been slow to produce Vista drivers. I appreciate the tip.

Hi again _irobot_: If you happen to have a recently new Digital TV tuner that is QAM capable, I think you'll find that you can watch HD cable QAM channels with Win 7 with the NVIDIA 7300 GT with the proper drivers. I'm getting flawless HD with my 7600GT on all the "over-the-air" channels that Comcast provides on it's QAM channels. I use a Hauppauge 1800 PCIEx1 tuner.
