Windows 7 x64, unable to open anything, not even task mgr, requires hard boot
I just installed win 7 x64 ultimate on a brand new set of seagate 500gb's run in raid0 128kb stripe, controlled by my bios. All was good for a week now except msn messenger doesn't start auto, even though it's supposed to. Certain programs like the driver for my printer won't install properly if you use the "open" choice in the download dialogue. Now it's having this weird issue where I got up this morning & tried to open ie, got an error saying it couldn't. Tried opening task manager, it couldn't. Nothing would open, not the start button, nothing. I did a hard boot & everything is normal again. I viewed the event log, there's over 10000 errors in the last 7 days, 1 critical in the last hour #41 Kernel-Power... I have zero infections, no fragmentation( I use perfect disc 11 pro). Drive array is healthy in windows & in bios. Page file is set to about 13gb or 1.5x my ram. I get an overflow error in ie 8 too, which I posted seperately about. That one makes no sense my cahe is 1mb used out of 100mb. I would have not noticed anything if the non-responsive state hadn't occured. I had a similar issue before, which I wound up re-installing the os fresh but it was on an older raid set. The windows version is 7006 or something, the newer one. It's not an upgrade, clean install, auto activated fine. There's gotta be something like a hotfix, but I can pin it down to any one thing that causes this to happen. I did notice that on this install, windows update had drivers for some hardware that it didn't before, like my stac92xx hd audio, a usb 2863 device, pretty much every piece of hardware except my printer. I haven't put a ton of programs or anything on yet. Here's the list: Panda Cloud Free, IObit Advanced system care pro(optimized for performance user), IObit 360 anti-malware, windows live msgr only,ATI catalyst, logitech setpoint, these all start with windows. These do not: Malwarebytes 1.46, Battlefield 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2 , hard drive tach, ventrilo 3.0, lavalys everest, driver sweeper, winrar, xfire. Any software that was not designed for x64 was installed in compatibility xpsp3 & run as admin. All windows service packs & updates were installed & auto-updates are on. No windows security features are disabled. Registry is clean, defragged, & seems to be in order. So here's my hardware specs. Dell XPS 410, Q6600 cpu 2.4ghz, 8gb pc6400 dual channel mode, main os drive is 2x sata2 seagate 500's in raid0 128kb stripe, extra drives NTFS formatted but empty 2x sata2 320's raid0 128 kb stripe 1x sata2 250gb non-raid, floppy,lg sata dvdrw, card reader, extra exhaust fans, antec 750w modular power supply, XFX HD5750 1gb ddr5 & just the normal input devices via usb,no usb hdd's. Temps are well within reason, cpu never goes more than 90f(not celsious),vid card runs at about 54c, so there's no overheating at all. Side notes: When hitting the start button the menu is slow to open icons, os seems a little slow even though my disc speed is 345mb/sec. Previous install was on the 320's but they're diffent brand drives so I got 2 matching segates to do this install. Something is wrong with windows here for sure. How do i pin it down or am I doomed to try again? I went with a 128kb stripe after researching various sizes, because I play bf2 type games I figured a larger stripe was required. I need raid0 for the speed & because I don't have 2 more matching drives to run in raid1. If I go raid1, well, you know It'll go with the smallest drives size for the array. So I'd lose 200-300gb.

Hi, Thanks for the post! I suggest you test this issue in in Safe Mode, Clean Boot and Device Clean Boot to determine the possible cause. Device Clean Boot ================= 1. Click Start, type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) in the Search bar and press Enter. 2. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers". 3. Right click on your sound card and then click "Properties. 4. In the dropdown menu of Device Usage, please choose "Do not use this device (disable)" and click OK. 5. Please use the same method to disable other dubious hardware such as: internal modem, network card and CD-R drive. Please note some devices such as video adapter are not available to be disabled.
