I did an in place upgrade from Windows 8 Enterprise. Do not extract the content locally, just mount your ISO image and run the setup.exe /auto:upgrade or prepare an USB devices and same command.

I used the USB device, but I am pretty sure your problem is because you extract all the content into a folder.

If you're running Windows 8 Enterprise, you'll need to install the Windows 8.1 Preview using the ISO. If you upgrade from Windows 8 Enterprise to Windows 8.1 Preview, you will "Keep personal files only", but will lose your settings and have to reinstall all of your apps. Unlike the conventional Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro upgrade, one cannot perform a direct upgrade from the original Windows 8 Enterprise edition to Windows 8.1 Preview.

Correct, I am going from a domain joined Windows 8 Enterprise to Windows 8.1 Enterprise Preview (both 64-bit).

At the VIP event I went to they showed doing it in place using SCCM 2012 (it may have been R2 Preview....not sure). This is not working for me.

I will give it a try mounting the ISO and seeing if that makes any difference.

I choose to "Start over from the beginning"

Then the Windows disappears and nothing happens. Looking in taskmgr there is no setup.exe running.

Thank you for the information. My question then is WHY advertise this feature if it is not included in the preview...especially if the preview is to test this functionality? I assume they used a special build at the Microsoft VIP Summit? I saw the live demo where they used SCCM 2012 to kick off the setup.exe /auto:upgrade and it worked.

Is there any document that specifically states this is NOT available in the 8.1 Enterprise preview? I'm not saying I don't believe you, I just (again) do not understand why it would be advertised on the blog post.

Upgrading from Windows 8 Enterprise to Enterprise Windows 8.1 Update Preview is not supported.  This is by design (and as a precaution) so that those running Windows 8 Enterprise in a production environment do not upgrade since the drive would have to be reimaged once the final version of Windows 8.1 Update is

Are there any logs that get generated or a way to have it generate logs? Currently the setupacc.log and setuperr.log are sparse (setuperr.log is empty).

Again, I CAN use this same ISO to do a bare metal install when booting up a new machine. In addition, I used this iso to import the bits into MDT 2013 and that worked without issue. I'm just having issues with the setup.exe /auto:upgrade bombing out.

I don't understand. I did an upgrade from Enterprise but using a USB device prepared with Windows 8.1 Enterprise Preview. Let me see if I can upgrade from a VM using just the mounted

That blog is referring to the implementation of the final, released version of Windows 8.1 Update and not the Windows 8.1 Updat

I dropped one of my VMs from the domain and put it in a workgroup (and reboot). Logged back in, launched an Admin elevated cmd prompt, cd to the CDROM drive and ran setup.exe /auto:upgrade. It behaved the same way. Got the the "Making sure you're ready to install" screen and then disappeared.

Only thing I can think to do is try a bare metal Windows 8 Enterprise from OEM media and then kicking off the Enterprise 8.1 upgrade. However, that still doesn't explain WHY it is not working in this instance. I would think this would be good feedback data to get to Microsoft. If only there was a log file that had SOME sort of information in it.

On the non-domain joined system I kicked off setup.exe /auto:upgrade from the mounted ISO after uninstalling App-V 4.6 SP2. It is now running.

I've gone back to my domain joined system with SCCM 2012 SP1 and kicked off the job after I uninstalled App-V 4.6 SP2 and here is where it is at so far...well see if it properly kicks off or not.

Great! It makes sense, the /auto:upgrade swith will try to upgrade without any user interaction, so if it get any warning or error, will just exit.

It should work now, but you will see it could take some time, mine took around 45 mins.

I kept it simple yesterday since I am just testing to see how in place upgrade is like.

On a domain-joined WIN8 Enterprise machine, I extracted the .iso, double clicked setup.exe, followed the prompt and 40 mins later, upgraded to 8.1 Enterprise with no problem; in place upgrade, kept user profile, Desktop app, files, configuration etc.

My SCCM client needed to get reinstalled due to C:\windows.old, other than that, so far so good.

Now I need to see what's the best way to run this process from SCCM, so in future my users can run the in place upgrade themselves. 

Doesnt look like Ent 8 to 8.1 is going to be like RT/Pro via Windows Update, and I think perhaps that's good too because you want to control it in the Enterprise environment.
