Windows 8.1 notifications / Outlook 2013

Hi all,

I've recently cleanly installed Windows 8.1 Pro and Outlook 2013 Professional Plus. I've noticed new email notifications hang / freeze / don't respond, when I hover over and click them. This occurs roughly 1 in 4 times.

Not working:

Working:

Difference = X top right of notification and clicking does nothing.

As you can see from the above images, as I've hovered over the email in the top image it does not show an X, whilst in the bottom image it does.

More importantly when I clicked on the email in the top image nothing happened. The notification just stayed there and after approx 45 seconds disappeared.

Hovering over the email in the bottom image showed an X and left clicking it bought the email up.

I've attempted to install KB2836988 as detailed here:

Notifications freeze in the notification area of Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2838015

But it errors with:

Windows Update Standalone Installer

This update is not applicable to your computer

Which doesn't surprise me as the System Requirements state:

Supported Operating System
Windows 8

No mention of 8.1. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,

David

Hello David,

Have you made any changes before this issue?
Do you have other programs have the similar issue like Skype, News notification?

As mention in the KB article , the update Applies to Windows 8, Windows 8 Enterprise, Windows 8 Pro. We cant install it in Windows 8.1
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2838015

Please run the command Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth in CMD to repair the image.

Hi Fangzhou,

No changes have been made on either laptop which this occurs on. Both have shown this behavior from a fresh build and installation of Office.

I don't have anything else configured to use notifications although I'll look into configuring this to test.

The hotfix looked applicable, I wonder if MS need to re-code it to allow it to work on Windows 8.1...

I've scanned the health of the component store corruption and it's come back with:

>DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 6.3.9600.17031

Image Version: 6.3.9600.17031

[==========================100.0%==========================]
No component store corruption detected.
The operation completed successfully.
