Windows 8.1 upgrade - no sound

As several other people have come across the same problem that I am having it clearly cannot be our computers but something wrong with 8.1 causing this - I need a simple fix to this please as I'm not a techie, I don't do BIOS and I certainly do not take the back off a computer.  The sound worked before and I need to work again - a Windows upgrade should not cause such problems in my opinion.

Thank you.

Did you check at your monitor whether you already connect audio cable from your PC to monitor, make sure you connect at green port

if you try using headset directly to your PC we can eliminate many things, because if this PC audio working fine with headset means no issue with driver, OS, onboard soundcard ect

Hi,

This issue can be driver related.

First, please try the audio troubleshooter which can diagnose and fix common sound playback and hardware problems.

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=260596

Please download the latest audio card driver from Manufacturer site and install it for testing.

If the issue persists, please help to upload the system information here for further research.

I will help to check whether there is any other hardware conflict on your computer.

Hi

I had already tried the drivers by two different methods (updating through Windows and downloading from web site) - neither made a difference.  The troubleshooter didn't find anything.

PC is HP Pavilion P6-2494ea, 64-bit, monitor has built in speakers, sound device is IDT High Definition Audio CODEC which is ticked as ok

Is there anything else you need to know?

Thanks.

I had checked the cable and had also tested with headphones and they didn't work either.  I have now tried selecting a different default device and have some sound again, it doesn't seem to be capable of the same volume as it once was and it is not the default device that I was using - the one that works is NVIDIA high definition audio (with a picture of a monitor), I was using the Speakers/Headphones one.

Hi Shug

Sorry for my bad understanding in English

But let me confirm with you

1. Did you already try update this latest driver

HP driver

2. Do you able to hear sound using headphone?

  • If yes, maybe update driver or check if any 3rd party software setting cause this issue
  • If no, please check at your monitor setting and adjust the volume setting, if still cant than high possibility the issue from your onboard soundcard
