Windows 8 Driver Installation problem

Operating Sistem Windows 8 Pro x64

  Motherboard Asus M5A97

Hello  , I've been scouting the internet a lot for answers ; unfortunately found none for Windows 8.Trust me , I really searched and tried solutions , but didn't work. This is the message I'm getting for EVERY new driver I try to install or , update old ones after unistalling :"Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device.Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC . The system cannot find the file specified ". I know the card is old but it worked before, (fresh Windows installation) , I get the same error if I try to update ex: the audio drivers.

Tried both methods "Searh automatically for updated driver software"  / "Browse my computer for driver software".Nothing...

First I discovered the problem while updating Daemon tools ... Virtual Device wouldn't install.

I think I encountered the same problem in Windows 7 long time ago.Fixed it by deleting "infcache.1" in DriverStore, but Windows 8 doesn't have this file.

I keep the OS up to date.Antivirus : Kaspersky Pure 3.I really keep my pc clean and organized.

Do you have any suggestions?Beside re-installing Windows. Also tried SFC /SCANNOW, and the DISM command. Scannow found some errors once , fixed them.

   Thank you.

I honestly hope I wrote in the right section.Searching didn't help me at all!

That is not the issue believe me.It worked on fresh Windows 8 install.I don't know what happened.I think because of some BSODS (overclocking unstability) something got deleted maybe?

I also stated that I have the same problem with other hardware ex: onboard audio chipset.

Hello

After a bit of research it looks like you may be experiencing compatibility issues after all.

I found some drivers for your NIC that are for Vista (quite a few years old) here:

http://www.realtek.cz/realtek-download.php?realtek=RTL8139_810x&system=4

If you are still having issues try fresh install.

Regards,

dr.d

Did you tried to follow steps to troubleshoot compatibility, for example run Windows 7 or Windows Vista driver or the latest driver in compatibility view.

It is good idea to contact the manufacturer too.

Yes.Didn't work. Daemon tools driver doesn't install. SuperSpeed RamDisk driver doesn't install , same error.Tried the fix with Disable Driver Signing before (saw a clip on youtube) didn't work.Seems that ultimate solution is a fresh install.

Hi,

In order to provide further troubleshooting steps, we need more information for research, please help to post the event log and minidump file here:

Please upload them to a file sharing service like Skydrive or "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

Link for how to  upload below.

Hello, thank you for taking interest into my problem.

I looked into events and searched for those that occur when I try to install new hardware;

Eaven new usb stick don't work.Tried one that I didn't use before ever on this machine. It wouldn't install the driver for it!

In the events you'll find error for Realtek Card driver installation and for the USB Stick.

Note: I have inserted the usb stick into my laptop afterwards and it worked!(so , usb stick was not the issue) .Also have Windows 8 on it.

Hi,

From this link, it appeared that this device is not compatible with Windows 8:

Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet Adapter

http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/compatibility/CompatCenter/ProductDetailsViewer?Type=Hardware&Name=Realtek+RTL8139%2F810x+Family+Fast+Ethernet+Adapter&ModelOrVersion=&Vendor=Realtek&Locale=1033%2C2057%2C3081%2C4105%2C16393&LastSearchTerm=Realtek%2BRTL8139%252f810x&BreadcrumbPath=Realtek+RTL8139%2F810x&TempOsid=Windows+8

Sometimes, we can fix such issue by install driver for Windows 7. Till now, I am sorry to say since we cannot install the driver in compatible  mode in Windows 8, I suggest contacting Realtek to find the well compatible Network adapter for Windows 8.

http://www.realtek.com.tw/products/productsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=7&PFid=7&Level=2&Conn=1

Thanks for your understanding.

Here is my experience of finding INFCACHE.1 in Win 8.

Share it to anyone who need it.

= = = = = = = = = = Dividing line = = = = = = = = = =

First, it's known that:

In the legacy MS OS, such as win 2k(out of our discussion), xp and 2k3, even vista and 2008 (no r2)

%systemroot%\inf\INFCACHE.1 is the driver cache file ( we can also think it as a driver index database).

From win 7 to 2008 r2,

The driver cache file is moved to the following directory, and some new files appeared.

%systemroot%\System32\DriverStore\INFCACHE.1
%systemroot%\System32\DriverStore\drvindex.dat
%systemroot%\System32\DriverStore\infpub.dat
%systemroot%\System32\DriverStore\infstor.dat
%systemroot%\System32\DriverStore\infstrng.dat

If these driver cache files is missing, corrupted or incorrect, those device based on the default drivers built-in system will not work properly.

= = = = = = = = = = Dividing line = = = = = = = = = =

From win 8 to the latest widows version,

It seems that MS removed the driver cache which existed as files in the past.

= = = = = = = = = = Dividing line = = = = = = = = = =

We've spent some times, and it's not easy to find the new way MS store the driver cache msg in win 8, there has none MS offical explanation.

After win 8.1 is released, we still insist on looking for the driver cache storage location,

Misled by the old version of windows, we think the driver cache should exist as file format as before, and we get nothing from file comparison and tracking.

Then we try to find a new ideas to get new progress, and try to search any helpful msg from MS or Search Engine.

= = = = = = = = = = Dividing line = = = = = = = = = =

Finally, one day I found someone said he believe it's functionality has been moved to the registry as HKLM\Drivers, and that the HIVE is loaded on demand.

But I can not find this registry in my win 8.1 or win 8,

After reinstall the os, at the first time while system is ready to use(System Initialization), Press [Shift]key + [F10]key to call the cmd wnd,

Then run "regedit", okay! the HKLM\DRIVERS is exists here! Export it now.

= = = = = = = = = = Dividing line = = = = = = = = = =

Here to share its data structures:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\DRIVERS]

There are 4 sub-items under HKLM\DRIVERS:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\DRIVERS\DriverDatabase\DeviceIds]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\DRIVERS\DriverDatabase\DriverFiles]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\DRIVERS\DriverDatabase\DriverInfFiles]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\DRIVERS\DriverDatabase\DriverPackages]

I don't know why it will disappear soon.

= = = = = = = = = = Dividing line = = = = = = = = = =

And there also has a registry:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\DRIVERS\DriverDatabase]

Which has the same data structures as HKLM\DRIVERS, but theirs content is different.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\DRIVERS\DriverDatabase\DeviceIds]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\DRIVERS\DriverDatabase\DriverFiles]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\DRIVERS\DriverDatabase\DriverInfFiles]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\DRIVERS\DriverDatabase\DriverPackages]

So I export it too.

= = = = = = = = = = Dividing line = = = = = = = = = =

After gather the registry above, I heard someone told me there has another file exists in the OS:

%systemroot%\system32\config\drivers

Well, just extract it from the System Installation Disk now!

= = = = = = = = = = Dividing line = = = = = = = = = =

OK, let' make a summary now.

The "%systemroot%\system32\config\drivers" can be extracted from System Disk easily, and the registry need to be exported at the System Initialization.

After replace them to your OS, a sysrem reboot is needed to to take effect.
