Windows 8 to 8.1 upgrade

I have installed Windows 8 on a machine using a license obtained from Microsoft Dreamspark while I attended school. I no longer have access to this as I have graduated. From my understanding I am unable to upgrade this machine to 8.1 using this license. Is this correct or is there something I have overlooked?

Hi,

From the license agreement of MICROSOFT DREAMSPARK DIRECT SUBSCRIPTION AGREEMENT:

End of Student Status.

The DreamSpark Direct Subscription is a special offering for students. Once you no longer qualify for the DreamSpark Direct Subscription (due to graduation or otherwise no longer meeting the definition of "you" above), your DreamSpark Direct Subscription will terminate; however, you may continue to use the software you obtained prior to termination of your student status subject to the terms of this agreement.

I was originally thinking that the following post applied to my situation:

Some editions of Windows 8 dont support updating to Windows 8.1 from the Store. These include the following:

  • Windows 8 Enterprise. Talk to your system admin about updating to Windows 8.1.

  • Windows 8 Pro, if installed by an organization or a program that uses Volume Licensing. Talk to your system admin, or the administrator of the program that was used to install Windows 8. If youre the administrator, you can find more info and links to Windows 8.1 ISOs in the Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation.

  • Windows 8 Pro, if installed using an MSDN or TechNet ISO, and activated using Multiple Activation Keys.  You might be able to download a Windows 8.1 ISO from MSDN or TechNet.

  • Windows 8.1 Preview or Windows RT 8.1 Preview. You might still be able to update from the Store. For more info, see Update from Windows 8.1 Preview to Windows 8.1.

However as of last night the update appeared in the store and I was able to download it without issues. I'm thinking I may have been missing a required patch or something.

Thanks for the response,

Chris Miller
