I recently bought a Sony laptop with Windows 8 home edition installed.
I have a Western Digital mybook NAS that is attached by cable to a Netgear Wireless router.
Whenever I try to access to NAS on my W8 laptop via Explorer, I get an errormessage stating that it cannot connect to the specific IP address and outputs an errorcode 0x80004005.

The NAS has a static IP address and if I ping it in command prompt, it replies promptly.
If I connect to the NAS by any other computer not running Windows 8, I can easily see the contents of the NAS.
If I open Internet Explorer an input the IP address, I access the NAS' user interface.

I have 1 Sony wireless Windows 8 laptop, 1 Asus Wireless Windows 7 home laptop, 1 Dell wired minitower PC, 1 HP Wireless Windows vista laptop and a htc sensation android smartphone. All devices are able to connect and access files on the NAS except the Windows 8 laptop.

The obvious problem is that Windows 8 can see the NAS but won't let me access its contents.

I've spent countless hours googling numerous forums and websites for a solution, but never have I had such a persistent problem.
I've tried editing the registry of EnableLinkedConnections and LanmanWorkstation. Both were as they should be.
I've disabled IPv6 and so on and son on...

I've read that the 0x80004005 error is a security issue that wont let me access a location.
It's a private laptop that only has one user; me.

Does anybody have a working solution to this or is there a fix in the awaitng Windows 8.1?
How Microsoft were able to create a product (in a time where nearly every electronic device is able to connect to a network) that can't connect to another network device, boggles my mind even further.

Any ideas and solutions would be bliss :-)

Have you tried to Disable "Secure Negotiate" on your windows 8 machine?

It can be done in the registry, here how to disable with powershell:

Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters" RequireSecureNegotiate -Value 0 -Force

I'm having a similar issue. I was connecting just fine, until an automatic update caused this problem. My mapped drives no longer connect, and I'm unable to manually login to my server via my two new Win 8 machines. I tried the Regisrty entry above, restarted, and it still doesn't connect.

I get a "windows security" pop up asking for network credentials, but when I type them in it says "incorrect password."
