I have a client who has installed Windows 8 Enterprise on a PC and when he runs Windows Update, it fails with an error code of 80096002.

I've tried looking it up, but I'm not really finding anything except for postings about trying to install a specific update. He is just trying to run Windows Update in general and getting this error.

I've not run into this elsewhere and am stumped at this point. I'd appreciate some suggestions as to which direction to go on this.

Run sfc /scannow to detect and fix broken files.

I had a similar issue and navigated here: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update

In my case it was "Managed by your system administrator" so I clicked Check online for updates from Microsoft Update.

It found 11 updates (as of this writing) and I was able to download and install them without incident.
