Windows Backup encountered an internal error (Windows 7 Ult 64bit)
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate RTM 64bit with all current patches installed. Using Windows Security Essentials as AV. I am attempting to perform a backup of my system to
an external Western Digital ESATA 1 TB drive and am getting the same error all the time. "Windows Backup encountered an internal error. Please review your settings and retry the operation. Error code 0x81000001"
When performing the backup I used the "Let Windows Choose" option. It appears to have completed something of the backup (517 GB), at least the Virtual Machine Hard Drive Image
portion. But nothing else. There is only 327 GB of used space on my Local Disk (1.81 TB). Both (internal system and external backup) drives are formatted NTFS.

Please perform
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Check-your-hard-disk-for-errors on all harddrives involved. If that does not help, try the instructions on
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 to perform a clean boot and troubleshoot which program or service causes the issue.

Hi,
I would like to confirm the following questions first:
1.
Can you backup a small text file successfully?
2.
Can you backup files to the local hard disk successfully?
I would like to suggest you verify the following Windows Backup related services:
Volume Shadow Copy
Windows Backup
After that please disable Microsoft Security Essentials and test the issue in Clean Boot as SenneVL suggested.

All drives involved have a 'clean bill of health' from the disk error checking program.
I successfully backed up the C:\ATI directory, about 520MB to the external drive, and to the internal drive 'G'.
Problem still occurs with Microsoft Security Essentials disabled. When I 'Clean Boot' the system, the problem still exists when a FULL backup is asked for.
Both the Volume Shadow Copy and Windows Backup services have a status of 'not started' with a Startup Type category of Manual and a Logon as Local System when the computer boots fresh.
The article you linked me did not help any as I have not seen any of those error codes.In Northern Italy

Hi,
Does it work, if you change the backup location to the internal hard disk?
According to your feedback, the issue can be caused due to some specify files or some corrupt files cannot be processed.
Based on the current situation, I would like to suggest you run
System File Checker to scan and repair the system files. If some files cannot be repaired, would you please run the following command and send us the
sfcdetails.txt from Drive C to the public folder of
SkyDrive, then provide us the link for downloading and analyzing?
findstr /C:"[SR] Cannot repair member file" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt
I also would like to suggest you check if you have some old useless files and delete them.

I apologize for the long delay in responding. I have been very busy and put this problem aside for a few weeks.
Current status: Things have changed…As I said, all drives involved are ‘clean’ no errors found by System File Checker. I changed my hardware setup around. The operating system and data are still installed on drive ‘C:’ which is
a RAID 5 (3 disk drive). I moved the internal Backup Drive ‘G:’ to the external eSATA enclosure, and renamed it drive ‘Z:’ I took the drive that was in the external eSATA enclosure, and put in the PC and named it drive ‘Y:’
Backups complete one full backup using the ‘Let windows choose’ option, to either the internal or external drives. However, either place will give one error every time, ‘Files skipped’ When I expand on this error, it tells me that it
skipped backing up drive ‘G:’ because it “cannot locate the drive”. Drive ‘G:’ should not and does not show in the disk management utility in Windows. Only drives ‘C’, ‘Y’ and ‘Z’.
Interesting point in the when I re-designated the drive letters above, ‘G’ was not an option to choose from.In Northern Italy
