Windows Search and Offline Files
I've had this problem since RC and have finally figured out what's causing the problem. When I redirect my documents folder to a network location and make those files available offline and then save files using Word or Excel 2007 to the reidirected file folder, I sometimes receive a dialog box entitled "Saving" with the words "saving as: [\\network location\file path]." The dialog box usually hangs around for about 15 to 20 seconds and then goes away. At about every third or fourth attempt to save the document, the same thing happens. However, If I take at csv file and save it using notepad, no problem, but saving through office causes the issue.
If I change the location for the offline files to a mapped drive and then make the file available offline, everything seems to work if I open the file using the UNC path. However, when I do a search for a document through the start menu, it is opened via the UNC path and that's when the problem occurs.
If I disable the Windows Search service, I'm able to save the files without the "Saving" window. If I switch to "Work Offline" for that particular folder, the problem does not show itself. If I choose to not make the folder available offline, everything is fine.
Has anyone else seen anything like this? I've not been able to find any reference to this problem anywhere. It's happening on multiple machines, regardless of network location.

Just wanted to clarify something: above when I said everything seems to work if I map a drive and open the file via the UNC path, I should have said, everything seems to work if I open the file using the drive letter. Once I open the files using the UNC path, the problem occurs.

I suggest you follow the steps below.
1. Click Start, click Run, type Regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.2. Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MrxSmb\Parameters
3. Click Edit, click New, and then click DWORD value.4. Type InfoCacheLevel to replace New Value #1, and then press ENTER.5. Click the InfoCacheLevel DWORD value in the right pane, click Edit, and then click Modify.6. Under Value data, select hexadecimal and type 10, and then click OK.7. Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't help with the problem. I tried the registry key on two different machines, restarted, and then tried saving...same results. I also tried creating that same key in the SmbMrx10/Parameters and SmbMrx20/Parameters keys, but received the same results.

You may try this method:
In IE8 click Tools->Internet Options->Connections->LAN settings
Under Automatic configuration, unselect “Automatically detect setting”.
If the issue still occurs, you may change the default authentication level in Windows 7 and see if it helps.
Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
The policy is:
Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
Please change to “Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated”.

No luck. I've opened an incident with MS Support as this problem is preventing us from completing our Windows 7 test rollout. When I get a resolution to the issue, I'll post the results here.

Well, no resolution. MS lists this as a bug and it appears to be a known issue with the Windows Search service in Windows 7. The workaround at this point is to customize the Indexing Options and remove the offline files and folders index, but that defeats the purpose of our objectives which are to make the files available offline and index the contents to more easily find information via a search...
Waiting for a fix.

Many of us are having this same issue. I will post if we find a solution, but please do so as well. If you disable offline files service this problem goes away... but again that defeats the purpose of what we are trying to do as well...
We are all very frustrated here.

I'm very frustrated too. New server, new computers..... slow network performance in Excel, Word sometimes with old files.

I had a similar problem to this, i could save using notepad but not using word or excel. I did notice however that te offline folder changes were not being saved, ie if i created a folder locally it was not reflected on the network.
My immediate thought was - permissions. Try applying domain users full control on the network share root - and apply to sub folders and iles. This solved the problem for me. I havnt yet nailed down the precise security required for just the user in question
yet but for me it is low priority. At least if this works for you its a start.

update: Another thought is to check any policies being applied to the respective computer either locally or by the Domain Controller the pc is registered with, check under Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Search
I discovered i had disabled indexing for offline files, not entirely sure why, perhaps this was back n the XP days when the computers simply we not powerfull enoug to cope.
