Hi lionbloom, ·Is there any other security software installed on your computer?·What is the service pack installed on your computer? 1. A possible reason for this problem is that you have conflicting security software installed fully or partially on the computer. Remove all other security software from the computer 2. Runonline virus scan and check if any malware or virus activity found on the computer. You may run online virus scan from the below link:http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm If the issue still persists post in your query in the below link:http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/mse Also, refer the below link: You cannot start the Windows Firewall service in Windows XP SP2:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920074 Regards:Samhrutha G S - Microsoft Support.Visit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think.

Thank you for your response.I have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware software on my PC along with Microsoft Security Essentials which replaced TREND security software. It was completely removed before the installation of Essentials.I do not know the Service Pack, but I am sure it is current.I ran the FULL online virus scan as suggested with no issues. It did its job.I will hopefully have positive results tomorrow 2/1/11.
