Bryan Are you using an elevated command prompt for that command? Did you stop the Windows Update service before using that command? Go to this thread. We have had good luck with this process solving the error message 80070424. Look at the second message in the thread and follow the instructions very carefully. windows update error 8E5E0442 - TechNet Forums: http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3448011&SiteID=17 If this post helps to resolve your issue, click the Mark as Answer button at the top of this message.By marking a post as Answered, you help others find the answer faster. Hi, I tried everything in the above post, and I still received error code 80070424. I have Vista Ultimate 64 Bit, service pack 1. Updates used to work, but the last time they worked was in June 2008. I can't tell you the exact dates, because all the changes recommended in the above post caused my update history to be wiped out. Any ideas, John

I have a Vista Home Basic 64bit. I am encountering the same problem with the Winows Update. I tried your suggestion, after all the others seen in the different fora, but running the windows installer 4.5 for Vista SP1 64 bit (Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msu) was not possible. 'De Updategeldt nietvoor uw systeem' (update not suited for your system) Is there still something else I can do?

I started having the same problem with Vista Ultimate 64 after Sept 16th 2008. I have one question about the above advice. It seems to me the correction is for a 32 bit system, not a 64, is that correct? I am hesitate to start something that may crash the whole system. My previous system was Win2000, and I have had nothing but problems after upgrading to Vista.

I have read quite a few forums on this problem and it does seem to me that the solutions given only work on the 32 bit and not the 64 bit. I myself am having the same problem on the 64 bit and none of the solutions listed above or on any other forum I have found are mentioned to work on the 64 bit system. Please if anyone figures out what to do in order to correct this error let us know.

I also have this problem....not able to update Vista X64 after installing SP1 in 2008 11. Also, screen savers and sleep options dont work anymore. Very frustrating to say the least. Is this a Vista 64 problem that people are trying to fix using 32 fixes? I have also tried everything, including Microsoft support help and they just archived my problem and didnt offer anything else after suggesting a few fixes that obviously didnt work.
