Windows Update Not Working?
I connect to the internet via my HTC Touch Cell Phone using Internet sharing, update works fine on CA Anti-virus, also Adobe updater works. But Windows updater does not work, I get "error code 80072F76 - Windows Update Encountered an unknown error." . I checked out the thread in the Vista forum and tried installing SuperAntispyware but when I ran it, the computer crashed and I got the BLUE screen! If anyone has any suggestionsor help with this problem it would be much appreciated Thank you

Try disabling your security software (like CA Anti-Virus) while you run Windows Update. -Nick

HiThat error code is usually associated with a temporary connection issue. If you have another way of connecting to Windows Update, try that first.Or you can take a look at the following article to troubleshoot this issue. You may encounter temporary connection-related errors when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update to install updatesHope this helps.Thank You for testing Windows 7 Ronnie Vernon MVP

I went through the article and tried all the suggestions but am still unable to use Windows Update. I will visit a local free WiFi Hotspot and see if that works, and report back. In the meantime if anyone has any other suggestions?!

Some AV's/Security Suites have modules for scanning and/or filtering websitesthat run independantly from the main AV and Firewall modules. Search through the advanced settings and look for any type of Web Accesssettings, specifically anything having to do with svchost.exe or any other essential Windows Update process. If any of Windows Updates processes are hindered by means of scanning and/or filtering, or anything else that might keep the Windows Updates servers from effectively scanning your system for updates, that error message will be the result.GA P35 DQ6 Mb, Intel Wolfdale 8600 3.33Ghz C2D CPU., 4x2Gb Mushkin DDR2 1066 PC2 8500 Ascents Memory Mods., PNY-nVidia GE Force 8800 GTS (640MB), 4-Western Digital Caviar SATA(2) HDD's (internal), 1 EIDE-USB External; Hauppauge PVR 1600 TV tuner, Dual Monitor: (1) Standard up top, (1) WideScreen below; Altec Lansing Speakers. Forgot to mention:Wireless Internet connections usually entail much more strict variables than HARDWIREDwhen it comes down to how your system interacts with the WAN (internet). Many AV/Security Suites take that same strictness and, in a sense, multiply it.GA P35 DQ6 Mb, Intel Wolfdale 8600 3.33Ghz C2D CPU., 4x2Gb Mushkin DDR2 1066 PC2 8500 Ascents Memory Mods., PNY-nVidia GE Force 8800 GTS (640MB), 4-Western Digital Caviar SATA(2) HDD's (internal), 1 EIDE-USB External; Hauppauge PVR 1600 TV tuner, Dual Monitor: (1) Standard up top, (1) WideScreen below; Altec Lansing Speakers. I took my computer, it's a laptop, to a free WiFi hotspot and windows update worked fine, in fact I was able to stop the download take my computer home and connect to the internet in my usual way with my Cell, click "Try Again" and continue the download. I was also able to continue the download after a restart that was required by the downloads. So I assume the problem is not with the security or other settings in the computer but rather with the way I connect to the internet. Could it be something to do with the ISP? Or is there something I can do to make windows update work with my cell connection? Failing that I will have to visit a free WiFi hotspot about once a month for a scan and then continue the download at home. Or is there something like Windows Update Downloader available for Windows 7 RC? Thank you for all your suggestions any further work around this problem would be appreciated.
