Hi, He is referring to run the System File Checker (SFC) to repair Windows Vista system files 1. Click Start, type "cmd" (without the quote) in the Start Search bar, right-click cmd.exe and click run as administrator. 2. Input the following commands and press Enter after each line. sfc /scannow Note: There is a SPACE between "SFC" and "/Scannow". This command will take several minutes to complete. If the corrupted files are detected but cannot be fixed, we need Windows Vista Installation Disk to repair Windows. During the Windows Vista SP1 installation, this issue occurs when a third-party application holds open a file or locks a file that the Service Pack installation program has to use. For example, a third-party antivirus or antispyware application may cause this problem. If you are running any third-party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (McAfee, Norton, etc.), I recommend temporarily disabling or shutting them down during the troubleshooting process. Hi Mr X, I was about to post an "Ask a Question" with screenshots re: a couple of failed updates earlier, when I saw this thread. :) --The text follows-- Hi, on my Vista 32bit Laptop - update (KB2539636) failed. I've tried installing it normally, and then with everything I could turn off easily; stopped - also failed. I tried in Safe Mode with Networking - but couldn't get Windows Update running there.. The update is: (KB2539636). Security update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 x86. Also, after hiding update (KB2539636) - then update (KB2468871) failed too.. btw. Both have already installed succesfully on a Win7 32bit system however. (haven't tried the 64bit yet.) ------------------ So instead I'll go look into using the readiness tool first. Hi Mr X, thanks for your reply. I've tried so far with the 'panmap.dll' in %windir%\system32 - didn't seem to fix it, (but there's only one file available for me to copy from winsxs). Can I copy it from my win7 32bit? as it appears to be indentical in size there? tho version/timestamp differs. A 2nd missing file is msiexec.exe - there's 3 different copies in winsxs so I may have more luck finding a suitable replacement for this one. the 3rd file: msiexec.exe.mui only seems to be in winsxs so I'm not sure where I need to copy it TO. :) will review cbs.log again for clues. Files in WinSxS are usually hardlinked files. A hard link is a filename. Every file has at least one hard link. Files in system32 and files in WinSxS are usually hardlinks to the same file. did all the suggested stuff above plus much more kb2539636 failed for me also I manually installed dotnet4 client then downloaded the manual install for kb2539636. kb2468871 and kb2533523 also were failing I also manually installed them update how shows no updates available easy way to get to updates view update history; right failed line ; view detail; click more information link

To give yourself permissions to copy over the file Click Start - All Programs - Accessories - Right click Command Prompt and choose Run As Administrator. Type takeown /f c:\windows\system32\panmap.dll /a icacls c:\windows\system32\panmap.dll /grant Administrators:f If the file is in use when you try to copy it. Rename the old file, copy the new one in. Reboot and delete the renamed old one. With a valid file in System32 perhaps I can just delete the related store path for the old version that's missing? Is quite confusing how this winsxs/system32 hardlink idea works in practice.. " Ahh, I was getting to that point prior to the Laptop deciding to corrupt itself and fail. I just looked back up and MrX and Magon have some links also I was planning to follow too.
