What is this? Run chkdsk /r /f and sfc /scannow I'm skipping option one because it isn't free. ;0) Kathleen Moors

Hi, He is referring to run the System File Checker (SFC) to repair Windows Vista system files 1. Click Start, type "cmd" (without the quote) in the Start Search bar, right-click cmd.exe and click run as administrator. 2. Input the following commands and press Enter after each line. sfc /scannow Note: There is a SPACE between "SFC" and "/Scannow". This command will take several minutes to complete. If the corrupted files are detected but cannot be fixed, we need Windows Vista Installation Disk to repair Windows. During the Windows Vista SP1 installation, this issue occurs when a third-party application holds open a file or locks a file that the Service Pack installation program has to use. For example, a third-party antivirus or antispyware application may cause this problem. If you are running any third-party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (McAfee, Norton, etc.), I recommend temporarily disabling or shutting them down during the troubleshooting process. Please be sure to re-enable them once the process has completed. I recommend running Reset Windows Update Tool and System Update Readiness Tool. System resources, such as file data, registry data, and even in-memory data, can develop inconsistencies during the lifetime of the operating system. These inconsistencies can be caused by various hardware failures or software issues. In some cases, these inconsistencies can affect the Windows servicing store, and they can cause software updates not to work. We can run Reset Windows Update Tool and System Update Readiness Tool to resolve these inconsistencies. When Reset Windows Update Tool and System Update Readiness Tool detects incorrect manifests, files, or registry data, it might replace the incorrect data with a corrected version. Please follow the steps below. Step 1: Run Reset Windows Update Tool and System Update Readiness Tool 1. Please download and run Reset Windows Update Tool from the link below: http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9665683 2. Please download and run System Update Readiness Tool from the link below according to the System Type: System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista 32-bit http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2889489c-ee87-4607-8aa5-812e8078ab27&DisplayLang=en System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista 64-bit http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=14f76773-007c-493f-bece-243bc21ac73d&DisplayLang=en 3. Restart the computer and install Windows Vista SP1. Let’s reinstall SP1 standalone installer in Clean Boot. For your reference, I have attached these steps as below: Step 1: Download Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Standalone Installer ==================================================== 1. Download Windows Vista SP1 from the link below according to the System Type: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista 32-bit (Size: 544.3MB) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=f559842a-9c9b-4579-b64a-09146a0ba746&DisplayLang=en Windows Vista Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista 64-bit (Size: 873.0MB) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=86d267bd-dfcd-47cf-aa76-dc0626dcdf10&DisplayLang=en 2. Please save it on the Desktop. Step 2: Install Windows Vista SP1 in Clean Boot Mode ========================================= Please disable all startup items and third party services when booting to avoid conflict when installing Vista SP1.: 1. Click "Start", type: MSCONFIG in the search box and press Enter. Note: Please click "Continue" if the "User Account Control" window pops up. 2. Click "Services", check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3. Click "Startup", click "Disable All", click "OK" and restart the computer. Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This shouldn't affect the system or other programs. We can manually run these programs later. 4. Please double click the downloaded Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Standalone Installer and follow the instructions to install Windows Vista SP1. To restore the computer to use a Normal Startup, repeat step 1 above. Then click "Normal Startup" on the General tab, click "OK", and then restart the computer. Please take your time with the steps and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If there are any questions or concerns, please post here for further research. Hi Mr X, I was about to post an "Ask a Question" with screenshots re: a couple of failed updates earlier, when I saw this thread. :) --The text follows-- Hi, on my Vista 32bit Laptop - update (KB2539636) failed. I've tried installing it normally, and then with everything I could turn off easily; stopped - also failed. I tried in Safe Mode with Networking - but couldn't get Windows Update running there.. The update is: (KB2539636). Security update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 x86. Also, after hiding update (KB2539636) - then update (KB2468871) failed too.. btw. Both have already installed succesfully on a Win7 32bit system however. (haven't tried the 64bit yet.) ------------------ So instead I'll go look into using the readiness tool first. (I already know SFC reports unfixable errors from long ago I still need to figure out how to resolve. :\) Thanks for your suggestions, Regards, pknIf my post was helpful - give it a Vote. If it helps solve your problem - propose it as Answer. ;-)

Hello, Execute the suggested command to check files that could not be repaired after running sfc /scannow: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833 Performing a repair install of your OS (In-Place upgrade) should solve that if there is no way to repair them. Hi Mr X, thanks for your reply. I've tried so far with the 'panmap.dll' in %windir%\system32 - didn't seem to fix it, (but there's only one file available for me to copy from winsxs). Can I copy it from my win7 32bit? as it appears to be indentical in size there? tho version/timestamp differs. A 2nd missing file is msiexec.exe - there's 3 different copies in winsxs so I may have more luck finding a suitable replacement for this one. the 3rd file: msiexec.exe.mui only seems to be in winsxs so I'm not sure where I need to copy it TO. :) will review cbs.log again for clues. So an 'In-Place Upgrade' might be required yet to fix these 3 then perhaps. Regards, pknIf my post was helpful - give it a Vote. If it helps solve your problem - propose it as Answer. ;-)

Files in WinSxS are usually hardlinked files. A hard link is a filename. Every file has at least one hard link. Files in system32 and files in WinSxS are usually hardlinks to the same file. Therefore copying won't help. -- .. -- "pkn2011" wrote in message news:5535d98e-ec3f-4d85-bd6f-b71cbb68c641... > Hi Mr X, thanks for your reply. > > I've tried so far with the 'panmap.dll' in %windir%\system32 - didn't seem > to fix it, (but there's only one file available for me to copy from > winsxs). Copy over the system32 one. With minor exceptions windows looks to the system32 folder to load files. -- .. -- "pkn2011" wrote in message news:8376cda0-a7ee-4305-9149-63a2f1a7367d... > Hi David, you wrote.. > > "Files in WinSxS are usually hardlinked files. Hi David, you said. "Copy over the system32 one. With minor exceptions windows looks to the system32 folder to load files." Thanks again. Will give it a try soon, now my Laptop is 'working' again.. To give yourself permissions to copy over the file Click Start - All Programs - Accessories - Right click Command Prompt and choose Run As Administrator. Type takeown /f c:\windows\system32\panmap.dll /a icacls c:\windows\system32\panmap.dll /grant Administrators:f If the file is in use when you try to copy it. Rename the old file, copy the new one in. Reboot and delete the renamed old one. You could type in the command prompt (assuming the new panmap.dll is in the root of drive C:) ren c:\windows\system32\panmap.dll c:\windows\system32\panmap.old copy c:\panmap.dll c:\windows\system32\panmap.dll -- .. -- "pkn2011" wrote in message news:8376cda0-a7ee-4305-9149-63a2f1a7367d... > Hi David, you wrote.. > > "Files in WinSxS are usually hardlinked files. Hi David, you said.. "(assuming the new panmap.dll is in the root of drive C:)" I copied it into the system32 folder directly to simplify path (renamed as panmap.new of course :) but thereafter followed your instructions Aok - so just waiting for SFC to verify I've only 2 missing files now hopefully! Also copied msiexec.exe over to Laptop in readiness. will re-check original file specs and then repeat same steps for this one next too.. Hi Again, Re: 'PublicKey neutral in the store, file is missing' The file isn't in the Store though still? so the original error continues.. With a valid file in System32 perhaps I can just delete the related store path for the old version that's missing? Is quite confusing how this winsxs/system32 hardlink idea works in practice.. Hi David, you wrote.. " Have you tried this. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 Windows update is involved in WinSxS. Downloading the x86 version of the readiness tool for Vista on the Laptop now.. Thanks, pknIf my post was helpful - give it a Vote. If it helps solve your problem - propose it as Answer. ;-)
