I'm not sure what running MS Word has to do with what you've written (Word should open fine in a Limited User account), but here is how to fix your password issue. If you have forgotten your password, if you have another user account with administrative privileges you can log into that account and change your original user account's password from the User Accounts applet in Control Panel. If you don't have another account like this set up or don't have the password to it, you'll need to log into the built-in Administrator account. In XP Home, boot the computer into Safe Mode. Do this by repeatedly tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up. This will get you to the right menu. Navigate using your Up arrow key; the mouse will not work here. Once in Safe Mode, you will see the normally hidden Administrator account. The default password is a blank. In XP Pro, you do not need to go into Safe Mode. At the Welcome Screen, do Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to get the classic Windows logon box. Type in "Administrator" and whatever password you assigned when you set up Windows. If you reset the built-in Administrator account's password in Home or have Pro and don't remember the password, use NTpasswd to change the built-in Administrator account's password to a blank. Download the bootable CD .iso, burn with third-party burning software such as Roxio, Nero, or the free ImgBurn . Burn as an image, not as data. Boot with the media you created. You may need to change the boot order in the BIOS or get a temporary boot order menu with a special keypress. NTpasswd will run. Follow the instructions carefully. http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ Then go to the User Accounts applet in Control Panel and set passwords that you will remember and make other desired changes. WRITE THE PASSWORDS DOWN AND PUT THEM SOMEWHERE YOU WON'T LOSE THEM.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

OMG! If I could hug you right now I would! I accidently changed the logon setting on my xp desktop and when I rebooted the computer it asked me for a password, well I didn't have one set up so I was stuck. I rebooted again in safe mode and just hit enter when asked for logon details and finally got into the computer and changed the logon settings back to the wy they were. Thank you sooooo much!!!!

Do you have any suggestions for a situation where admin or administrator doesn't work when the password is left blank? I have 4 computers on a server that just died. Whoever was the original IT person didn't write down any passwords. I'm trying to just turn them into a workgroup to work together without a server. 3 out of 4 of them worked when I put in admin and left the password blank. The fourth and most important computer of course won't work. I'm locked out completely. Even when I try and boot in Safe Mode it still says hit ctl+alt+delete to login and again... blank isn't working with admin or administrator in the username. Please please please..... if you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi ;You have to go to Mycomputer right click then click on properties then you can change workgroup name locally. So have to change to no domain because you are out of server. I mean you don't need domain at all.But you have to login as an administrator. Maybe you don't have permission as an regular user. If you don't have domain so no GPO ( Group Policy Object ) then you can get access locally all four computer in the network. When you change workgroup with out domain please restart your computer and you can login workgroupDo your Backup every day // MCP
