Windows XP Professional will not start in any mode
I have a Dell Latitude D610 & I got it in 2005. Its running under Windows XP service pack 3 & I do not have any of the discs that it came with.I recently got a security update that I had about 15 corrupt files on the laptop, when I went to check what they where I noticed I had to reactivate/buy the licence for the security software so I thought I would remove this security software that was on it & replace it with the free version of AVG that I use on my personal computer.I could not remove the security software which I think is Microsoft owned so I tried to install the AVG software anyway. The Laptop would not download AVG completely so I attempted to remove the files manually that were corrupt.Now realising that this was a mistake because my laptop will turn on, show the DELL page & then all I see is a black/grey screen, with no errors or messages. I have tried <F2> & this brings me to the Blue & grey setup page, it has a list of folders as follows which most have a list of subfolders:SystemOnboard DevicesVideoSecurityPower ManagementMaintenanceDockingPOST BehaviorWireless I have tried <F12> & I can see the Black & white boot options page which reads:Use the up- and down- arrow keys to move the pointer to the desired boot device. Then, releasing both keys at the same time. This does nothing, I thought it would allow me to do a restore on the laptop.Any advice would be great??1 person needs an answerI do too

The Laptop would not download AVG completely so I attempted to remove the files manually that were corrupt.It's not MS owned or operated; it's one of the best (worst for you and others that have gotten duped) money-making schemes on the internet today.After turning the power on, and as the POST screen is going away, press the F8 key repeatedly and see if a boot menu comes up. One of them will be Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Arrow down to it and press Enter. Once it comes up, type in %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and press Enter. Once the GUI comes up, pick a restore point from a day or two before the scanner was installed.Hopefully the boot option menu will come up. If not, and you don't have a viable system backup or disk image, you may be looking at a reinstallation of Windows.SC Tom-There's no such thing as TMI when asking for tech support.

Okay no luck with that, nothing happens when I choose any of the options from the boot menu. I don't have the system backed up or a disk image butI have all my documents backed up so there is nothing on the machine that I’m afraid to loose, but don’t need the expense of it at the moment.Is there any thing else I can do?
