Windows XP SP3 booting all by itself
I have 2 pc's - 1 running XP home and the other xp pro. Microsoft updates were applied to both on 2/9/11. They were KB2479628,KB2478960,KB2483185,KB2476687,KB2393802,KB2485376,KB2478971. Ever since then the computer will shutdown fine and then later in the evening they will boot up. According to the event logs it appears that the boot up occurs anywhere from 1 to 3 hours later. This has never happened to either pc before. I did a "clean reboot" to one of them but it did not help. I changed the BIOS "wake on PCI PME" setting to disabled on the other and it did not come on last night, so apparantley that works. My question is are these updates supposed to cause this? Also the check for updates time settings appear to be fine - the one computer is set for every Thursday at 3:00PM and the other is set for every Monday at 7:00am.Any insight would be appreciated.1 person needs an answerI do too

Update are apply for Windows Operating System and less likely affect BIOS setting , unless there is issue that Kernel require to communicate with BIOS. And in that case Windows Update won't change your setting. Some of your update are Kernel update and my guess is that the setting was enable but didn't work and update cause it to work.Another guess , is that may be you update your BIOS and it cause this behavior.

Thanks for the response. I changed the 2nd computer BIOS yesterday to disable the wake on PCI PME and it was still in the off state this morning as was the 1st computer. Up until these Microsoft updates I had never touched the BIOS of either computer. Maybe your theory about the MS Update to the Kernel causing those is correct.

I also suggest to contact Microsoft Update Support, You could try : http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527#tab3They could investigate this furture. Also you may try to contact your PC manufacture or motherboard manufacture and report this.
