Windows media streaming over the net and security
Great new feature on windows 7 that now you can listen to your music any where which is on your computer at home. But then there is a security concern as well. I have a ton of trance music and ASOT radio at my main windows 7 computer which is at home. All music in my windows media player library. Now on my cisco router I forward the internal port to the external interface which is my external IP. I got the external tcp port 44515 map to the internal port 10245 which belongs to 192.168.10.12. This ports are what microsoft says. Now the other thing is they recommend me to also use port 443 as the external port for better performance. Is this for security since 443 is http over ssl? Will I lose any performance not using 443 as well? I have a very fast internet connection at home with 30mb/s up and 5mb/ down. I don't understand why they need two ports to stream my media. I create an access list to deny traffic going out on port 443.

Yes, you can use external port 443 or the external port number specific to your computer for home media streaming. For those users who are using low speed connection, it may lag so bad even when playing high bitrate audio. For them, we recommend they using both to enhance performance.Sean Zhu - MSFT
