Wireless security concern - network key
I have a belkin54g router which is connected by cable to my P.C. (Windows 7) and wirelessly to my new laptop (XP). All works fine. For security I have set up a 12 digit pre-shared key in Belkin setup. However when attempting a manual connection on laptop, set up box immediately shows, every time, an 8 digit network key (original and confirmed) (as 8 dots) and will connect to the network on this info. I don't know where this network key originated. I have tried to change it to my 12 digit pre-shared key in wireless network connection properties but windows ignores the change and reverts to the phantom 8 digit key. I am concerned that anyone within range can enter my network as the network key is always pre-entered. Any guidance would be much appreciated. 1 person needs an answerI do too

HiThe phantom dots are for security purpose that the way it should be.The general security of your Wireless depends on your Router, if the Router is set with the Wireless security On, then it is secured. If you are Not sure borrow/ask a friend to come with his/her laptop and see if they can log on Not knowing your password. I have a similar problem. A PCwith XP is connected via a properly functioning Belkin card to the router but no applications (IE, Firefox, Chrome) can still connect to the internet because Wireless Network Connections Properties no longer retains either the 10 character or the 26 character key. 3 laptops with Vista can connect to it with either key.
