XP Home edition turns into XP Professional..... out of nowhere!!
Used XP Home on my machine for 2 years. Suddenly the log on required me to click on my account. Nothing else changed. But I checked (in user accounts) in order to go back to a "clean" start, and found anew user account that appeared out of nowhere. I deleted it. Then I noticed at startup that the startup screen said that I am now using XP PROFESSIONAL. How on earth could that happen. Any ideas?? 1 person needs an answerI do too

Hi Baxi123, - Did you remember making any particular changes to your computer after which it prompted you to login? Try checking the version of Operating system that is listed using Winver. Here's how to do it: a. Click Start, click Run, type winver, and then press Enter. The window which appears now displays the version and edition of Windows you're running. Each version ofWindows comes in different editions with different features. This window also displays a service pack number if your version ofWindows has been upgraded with a service pack. Which version of the Windows operating system am I running? Post back with the status that is listed. Hi Divya,I did nothing in regard to the operating system apart from a defrag about 3 weeks ago.I had the machine set to boot to my desktop. No login procedure at all.Just before this happened I'd had a difficult day logging onto the internet and had tried for several hours. My wife's computer was OK. She is hard wired whilst I am wireless. The extra user account was a short 3 letter word plus a 2 letter extention and I can't remember what it was. I had not been too concerned about deleting it until I noticed the XP/Professional thing. The winver screen says: Windows XP professional version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.100427-1636: Service Pack 3.My machine has run Vista and I then created a dual boot system with XP Home, and its been steady like that for about 2 years. I no longer use the Vista and only use it to check an old email account occasionally. Thanks Baxi

Two possibilities: 1) A miracle.2) Someone installed it.

I'm going with the miracle 'cos as sure as eggs is eggs I didn't do it. My only serious thoughts were possibly a "hacker" close by, got into the machine somehow and did it. I was able to delete the account so they hadn't made it an admin account. But I had no reason to install Professional. I don't particularly like it either.Still goin for the miracle.
