XP Laptop Power Option
Few weeks ago, I formatted my old NEC laptop and reloaded XP pro. What troubles me now is, the power option in the control panel behaves as it is not a laptop. There is no advance option for laptop at all such as "when i press the power button", or "when i close the lid"...Also, after shutdown, it doesn't turn off automatically but instead, a message "it is now safe to turn off your computer" appears and after that I have to manually press the power button to turn it off completely.Does anyone have any idea, please?1 person needs an answerI do too

That would be a NEC Versa M370, right? If you used a genuine bootable XP installation CD to reinstall XP, XP has no idea what kind of hardware you have (well, it knows a little...).Did you also install Service Pack 3 and the latest updates from Microsoft? If not, you should do that before undertaking any troubleshooting. It would seem that you would then need to go out to the NEC World Wide Web site and see what NEC specific drivers you need. It is unlikely the XP installation CD will have NEC specific drivers on it. Sometimes drivers come on a seprate CD with the system, sometimes that CD is missing, sometimes it is really old. Do you have anything like that?I would go out the the NEC site and see what driver updates you might need (video, audio, network, etc.).Sometimes when power options are not working as expected, a video driver from the manufacturers WWW site is needed.Additional information will eliminate guessing and trying things. If you are not sure exactly what you have exactly, do this:What is your system make and model? Please provide additional information about your system:Click Start, Run and in the box enter:msinfo32Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste the information back here. For video driver information, expand the Components, click Display, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste the information back here. For audio driver information, expand the Components, click Sound Device, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste the information back here. There will be some personal information (like System Name and User Name), and whatever appears to be private information to you, just delete it from the pasted information. This will minimize back and forth Q&A and eliminate guesswork.Don't guess what the problem might be - figure it out and fix it. It is Versa E2000. Yes, I have installed SP3 and all latest updates from Microsoft soon after re-installation. I have the original NEC driver CD, but I preferred to install the driver from NEC website, since I encountered BSOD after installing the drivers from the CD (not too sure if any of the drivers in the CD had caused the BSOD and system crash, but I managed to solve the problem by installing drivers from website). Here's the info you need:OS Name Microsoft Windows XP ProfessionalVersion 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600OS Manufacturer Microsoft CorporationSystem Name PENTAGON369System Manufacturer NECSystem Model Not AvailableSystem Type X86-based PCProcessor x86 Family 6 Model 13 Stepping 8 GenuineIntel ~1194 MhzBIOS Version/Date NEC NOTE BIOS Version /379B0800, 9/13/2004SMBIOS Version 2.31Windows Directory C:\WINDOWSSystem Directory C:\WINDOWS\system32Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1Locale United StatesHardware Abstraction Layer Version = "5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp.080413-2111)"User Name PENTAGON369\jinkizdTime Zone Malay Peninsula Standard TimeTotal Physical Memory 1,280.50 MBAvailable Physical Memory 637.62 MBTotal Virtual Memory 2.00 GBAvailable Virtual Memory 1.96 GBPage File Space 2.96 GBPage File C:\pagefile.sysVideo driver info:Name Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics ControllerPNP Device ID PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3582&SUBSYS_81EC1033&REV_02\2&EBB567F&0&10Adapter Type Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Controller, Intel Corporation compatibleAdapter Description Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics ControllerAdapter RAM 64.00 MB (67,108,864 bytes)Installed Drivers ialmrnt5.dllDriver Version 6.14.10.4497INF File oem21.inf (i852GM section)Color Planes 1Color Table Entries 4294967296Resolution 1024 x 768 x 60 hertzBits/Pixel 32Memory Address 0xD8000000-0xDFFFFFFFMemory Address 0xD0000000-0xD007FFFFI/O Port 0x0000DE00-0x0000DE07IRQ Channel IRQ 10I/O Port 0x000003B0-0x000003BBI/O Port 0x000003C0-0x000003DFMemory Address 0xA0000-0xBFFFFDriver c:\windows\system32\drivers\ialmnt5.sys (6.14.10.4497, 1.33 MB (1,399,615 bytes), 8/15/2010 8:47 PM)Audio driver info:Name SoundMAX Integrated Digital AudioManufacturer Analog Devices, Inc.Status OKPNP Device ID PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24C5&SUBSYS_82131033&REV_03\2&EBB567F&0&FDI/O Port 0x00001C00-0x00001CFFI/O Port 0x000018C0-0x000018FFMemory Address 0xD0080C00-0xD0080DFFMemory Address 0xD0080800-0xD00808FFIRQ Channel IRQ 5Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\smwdm.sys (5.12.01.3890, 579.50 KB (593,408 bytes), 8/15/2010 8:35 PM)

That looks pretty good, so there goes my idea!Under Power Options, Power schemes are you able to select Portable/Laptop?How many Power schemes do you have available?Under Power Options is the Advanced tab totally missing or you just don't see the things under there you expect to see?Is there any difference in things if you login to XP temporarily as the Administrator account?I did some Goggling and can't find a "perfect" solution unfortunately but some people found relief with Method 1 in the following article (and it would be safe even if you do not have this exact problem - I just ran Method 1).http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913622/EN-US/There is also a chipset driver download on the NEC page, but I don't know how to tell if you need it or what you have right now. Some post I read said you need that. Another post said to "check the BIOS" for some power option setting that might be conflicting with XP - I am not too sure about that and can't look at it since I do not have your BIOS.Some of the posts I read do not make any sense at all.I would implement Method 1 of the Microsoft article since that seems to have helped others get their missing power options back and it will not hurt anything. You can also wait and see if perhaps some other folks will have some ideas.Don't guess what the problem might be - figure it out and fix it. There are 6 power schemes available (Home/Office desk, Portable/laptop, Presentation etc.). Advanced tab is not missing, but the only option is "Always show icon on the taskbar", no other option listed as expected.I had tried Method 1 as proposed, but nothing changed. I also installed chipset driver from NEC website but result is not as expected.I have further questions regarding Method 2 and BIOS. What I understand from link, in order run Metod 2, I need to have another XP based laptop to copy its power options setting to my laptop. Could you provide example of DOS command since I'm not quite clear with the examples provided?Regarding BIOS check, what specifically do I need to look for?
