XP freezes on startup
My father has a Tiny (now out of business) desktop. It came installed with XP but with no discs. He never made a recovery disc.I tried to install an HP Officejet 4500. After a bit managed to get it too print - great. Then tried to show him how to use the scanner and it was not recognised. Followed HP instructions to re-install and eventually got to a screen that said USB drivers not compatible. Screen froze. Hard re-boot (Quite a few times). XP would not start but would when selecting last known configuration. As it was late thought that is OK and powered down for the night.Next day have been unable to get XP to start at all. In normal startup it hangs at the Windows screen and switches of keyboard so its back to hard boot again. In safe modes when you can see the drivers loading it gets as far as the driver in C:\windows\system32\mup.sys.I have followed other forum responses and downloaded a recovery disc and used that to run chkdsk /r. At the end, message was that it had repaired some things but no details. Exited, but no change. Tried other suggestions but still no luck.Made a ubuntu operating system cd and can get into all the data files using this - spreadsheets, documents etc. so hardware all seems to be OK (printer disconnected at this time.Is it possible the mup.sys file is corrupted or is it the next one to run that is causing the problem?I can get one from an old Windows 2000 laptop. Is this the same file? Would one from an XP Porofessional PC do. I can also get one later from an XP Home Edition later from my sister. If I borrow my sister's XP disc can I reinstall XP using it but using the key on the Tiny PC?Should I try uninstalling the printer using ubuntu?Any help would be appreciated as my Dad is (was) very happy with XP as he knows his way around it and it more than covers his needs and he does not want to upgrade and re-learn Windows unless he really has to.Which if all else fails, would a new Windows version work whilst there is a faulty XP on the hard disc?Hope I have given enough info. If not please respond. 1 person needs an answerI do too
