Xp freezes with no errors.
Hey guys, this question is about a computer that my friends own. I have been trying to help them fix a problem that is getting rather annoying. After about five minutes of use, their windows pc freezes and becomes unusable. The only way to regain control is by restarting. I have run various virus scans and malware scans to try and phase out the issue but, the things they found didn't solve the issue. I thought it might also just be overheating so I had them clean out the fans with compressed air while grounding themselves out and while they were inside i had them disconnect everything and reconnect it to make sure it was snug. everything appears to be fine on the inside. There are no errors reported before it freezes and I have tried updating all of the drivers from the computer managemet utility needless to say, that didn't help. So far we have ruled out viruses, hardware being out of place, overheating, and driver issues. Any ideas on what to do?2 people need an answerI do too

Hello KillerDan3000
Check the RAM and the hard drive
RAM
If you have more than one stick of RAM (256MB or more) swap them over or take one out and try again with only stick #1. If it does not help or makes things worse swap the sticks and try again with only stick #2. Running with one stick at a time will identify if you have a bad stick. Try moving the RAM to a different slot as well.
OR
You can put either of these free programs on a floppy and test the RAM. Let them run for hours to do many passes if you can
memtest86 http://www.memtest86.com/
Windows Memory Diagnostic http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
Memtest on CD ( this is a bootable CD and can be used when you cannot access an operating system)
http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/256/mirrors.php
Use your CD burner to write it onto a CD as an ISO image
Test with only one stick of RAM installed at a time
Hard drive check
Back up all data you cannot afford to lose
Start/Run and type in
cmd
OK
At the prompt type
chkdsk /r (there is a space before /)
Enter
Reboot and chkdsk will run.
Be prepared for this to take a while if chkdsk finds and tries to repair problems
