Yet Another Unidentified Network Problem
The Machine: Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, freshly installed and updated (English version, machine in Brazil) The Hardware: Onboard network card identified as RealTek PCIe GBE family controller; A D-link DI 524 wireless router; a Thompson SpeedTouch 510 v6 DLS modem Not-So Hardware: LogMeIn Hamachi The Setup: Hamachi is always installed. Usually, the Modem is directly connected by cable to the machine; when I need to share the Modem, I plug the Router in and plug the Modem to the Router. The machine is set to automatically fetch IPs; the DHCP on the modem and the router work just fine. This is an arrangement I've been using since Windows XP; I formatted the machine to install Win7 around October, and the same arrangement worked fine until recently. The Problem: A month ago, the connection started getting wonky; MSN would drop frequently, sites would time out intermittently. I noticed an "unidentified connection" popping up in the Network and Sharing Center (Net Center) along with the other connections; I thought nothing of it at the time. Around the middle of January, the router wasn't being identified in the Net Center; only the 'unidentified network' showed in its place, and I enjoyed no internet connection via the router (plugging the modem directly still worked). I do not remember if the router used to show up at the Devices and Printers window, but it sure does not show up there now. I checked for the Bonjour service problem (I don't have it; I do have Adobe CS5 in this machine). I attempted forcing a MAC number into the onboard card (via Device Manager), destroying the route table (Route delete 0.0.0.0), and forcing a reinstall of the network card drivers (both RealTek and Hamachi). After the last one, no networks were getting identified, ever; the Net Center only showed one Unidentified Network entry, no matter what was plugged in. So, I formatted the machine and reinstalled Windows. Current Situation: I have two identified networks in the Network and Sharing Center; Hamachi and Modem. If I plug the router in, I have three; Hamachi, Router and Unidentified network. If I ask to see a full network map, Windows says the Internet is being accessed via Unidentified Network instead of Router. I can access both Router and Modem via their IPs. Internet connection is stable with a direct connection, but messy when the router is connected. Why am I blaming Windows: No other machines in the home exhibit the same problem. Our Vista Home x32 laptop enjoyed lots of time connected directly to the same router-modem setup, while sharing connection with all other machines, without any issues. No machines connecting wirelessly show any problems. Added to that, as I mentioned, this situation just didn't happen before. I hope someone here can help.
