You folder can't be shared. Windows 8

I have just moved to Windows 8 from Win7, and must say I'm having some major difficulties with file sharing.

For this post I want to target sharing my a Windows Folder to be accessible on my Macbook, as it had been while I was using Windows 7. When I right-click the folder in question, select the Sharing tab, then click Share -> Share, I get the message "You folder can't be shared."

Any thoughts on the reason for this?

Its incredibly confusing because the folder is in fact shared even though when I look at the properties of the folder it says "not shared".

Hi,

Does this issue only occur to one folder? If so,

You can refer to this article:

Share files and folders on a network or a shared PC

Have you found a solution yet? I know this thread is 4 month old. I have 4 new windows 8 laptops doing the same thing. If you right click and share the folder it tells you the folder cannot be shared. At first I thought it was a permissions issue but it's not.

Even though the folder properties show it's not shared you can right click on Computer/manage/shared folders/shares and it's in the directory as a shared folder and it's with any folder whether it is root or in a sub folder.  Once I figured out there is some sort of glitch and it IS shared I haven't worried about it any more but I would like to know. I set these up for SMB scanning from various MFP's and it's a stumper when you first run across it

Once again, Microsoft demonstrates incredible incompetence. Sharing is thoroughly broken by what can only be described as not doing their job!!!!

plain old sharing  ==>  not working anymore!

homegroup  ==>  frustrating and not working

Skydrive  ==>   leave me ALONE you bastards - I want to share things locally on my ethernet!!!

I hate Microsoft sometimes. Windows 8 and 8.1 are terrible still and it's 2014

In setting up a new laptop computer, I tried everything but still got the "your folder can't be shared" message. Then I tried joining my home group (just joining it, not sharing anything through the home group sharing options page). And that fixed the problem!
