add printer on home network
I just reimaged my Windows XP tablet which has always been on my home network sharing 2 printers and internet thru a router with no server. Now I can't figure out how to add the software to my tablet so it can print to the Brother HL-2700CN color laser that is just hooked to the router. Do I start by just loading the CD and choosing Standard Installation, not Custom, and then choosing either Network Shared Printer (probably not since no server) or Brother Peer-to-Peer Local Printer, and not Local Printer (USB or parallel cable). The next page says 1. Search the network (doesn't find it), 2. Specify your machine by IP Adress (what?) 3. Specify your machine by Node Name (what?) I've messed with this for too long and can't figure it out. I must have figured it out back when, since it was working in the past. It still does print from my other pc in the same situation on this home network. Can I look at it's setup somewhere?1 person got this answerI do too

Hi Jeff, Are you still having this problem? Here is a PDF file containing the user manual for your printer. If you go to page 25 there is a section titledWindows® 2000/XP Printing (Printer Driver not yet installed) . This covers the basic steps for setting up the printer as a networked printer. If you have the print driver already installed, then the section titledWindows® 2000/XP Printing (Printer Driver already installed) on page 27 should do it for you.Let us know how it goes and we'll be around to help if you have any problems or questions. -z1p

Thanks z1p. I tried but failed. It says in Step 7 to Enter the IP address, or name the printer you wish to configure. The Wizard will automatically enter the Port name information for you.It did not enter it. I have no idea what the IP address or name of the printer is, so I leave it blank and click Next. It says Address is not valid. What should I do?I do have another WinXP pc next to this one that can use this printer. I can look up things on it, if you tell what to look up and how to look it up.Thanks!

Hi Jeff, I expect there should be a way to get the printer to either show or print its configuration info, which would include its IP address. I don't have a lot of time right now, so can't check the manual right now. I'll try later, but let me know if you have any luck finding the info. -z1p

I didn't see how to get the printer info in the doc I referred to earlier, but I did find it in the quick setup guide found athttp://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public/us/us/en/doc/manual_index.html?reg=us&c=us&lang=en&prod=hl2700cn_all&dlid=&flang=English&type2=-1See Print Printer Settings Page on 33rd page in the PDF, number as page 31 for printer out the configuration. (hint: hit set 3 times on the printer ;^)The config info should list the IP address of the printer.

Thanks, but I don't know what config info is or where to access it so that I can get the IP address. Also, should I do whatever you tell me to do to get the IP address on my tablet (the one needing the printer installed on) or on my other home pc which works currently with that printer?

config info = configuration information [for the printer]. The instructions in theQuick Setup Guide for your printer, which you download from HERE , provides the instructions for printing out the printer settings (configuration information). See Print Printer Settings Page on 33rd page in the PDF, number aspage 31 for printing out the configuration information for the printer. You just press theSet button on the printer three(3) times and it should print a page with all the configuration information for the printer. This information should contain the printer's IP Address. Rerun the setup you did the other day and enter the IP address from the sheet, when you are asked for the printer's IP address.

This is so cool! We got this hooked up! I printed the settings by hitting the Back and Set button on the printer and it printed a 3 page report that gave me the IP address. So I just put in the printer's CD and selected a peer-to-peer setup. It asked me for the IP address. It did it! I just printed a test page on it. Thanks!
