can't enable hyper-v on i5 win 8.1 laptop

Folks,

I cannot figure out how to get Hyper-V to run on my new Dell I7352 i5 (5200) 8GB RAM Windows 8.1 touch-screen laptop.

Running 'Coreinfo.exe -v' indicates full support for hardware virtualization (HYPERVISOR - Hypervisor is present, VMX * Supports Intel hardware-assisted virtualization, EPT * Supports Intel extended page tables (SLAT)), and the BIOS setting for virtualization is checked 'Enabled'. But, the Hyper-V option is missing in the "Turn Windows Features on/off" application; and running "Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Hyper-V All" in an elevated PowerShell session, generates the error that 'the Feature name Microsoft Hyper-V is unknown'; likewise, running "dism.exe /Online /Enable-Feature:Microsoft-Hyper-V /All" in an elevated command prompt, generates essentially the same error and says to use the '/Get-Features' option to find the feature in the image.

So it appears that the hardware (BIOS, etc) and underlying OS do support Hyper-V (as MS and Intel advertise it should). What am I doing wrong?

You need Windows 8.1 Pro, not just Windows 8.1.

Thanks Bob. I'd just come to that conclusion myself, and was about to ask for verification. Ah well, I'll give Virtual Box a shot, and hope that it works (or bite the bullet and fork over the additional $ for the upgrade).

Thanks again.

No problem, you're welcome, though you might try VMWare player, it's another free virtualization package.  I've seen a few VirtualBox problems lately...
