Was the cable modem previously connected to a different computer? If so, you might have to reset the cable modem after moving it to the Dell laptop. Then, go to Control Panel > Network Connections , right-click the Local Area Connection, clickStatus > Support , and see if it has received an IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway. An IP Address starting with 169.254 would indicate that the computer can't communicate with the cable modem.Boulder Computer MavenMicrosoft Most Valuable Professional

Have you updated XP to post-SP3? Or you are trying to establish first connection? Sometime plugging computer to router/modem updating will allow appropriate, newer drivers. Just a suggestion.Do you have a firewall which may be preventing oyu to connect because Windowx firewall is also trying to establish conenction. This is a most common problem to solve in networking issues.
