connecting Gateway laptop w/ Vista home addition to internet
Last week my daughters laptop was acting stange. It was trying to update & keptshutting down, I could not get in to fix it. Some one here answered my post & got me up & running again, I was amazed. Somehow in the shuffle, she has lost her ability to connect to the internet. I know I did a system restore to get her operating, but now I'm stuck again. I tried resetting the router, I called Roadrunner & Linksys. I have done everything I can think of, including taking it all apart & starting all over again. The laptop only connects when I hook it right to R.R. that is now running my desktop. I tried shutting everything down for 5 minutes & starting it all back up, nothing!! I am not a computer whiz, but I set up both of them by myself. I wonder if the system restore screwed something up? I just keep getting- windows can't detect a network. I need help, the router & computer are only a year old. sherri

Hi Sherri, Before moving on, I suggest you refer to the following Microsoft KB to modify registry. Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233 Then, change the TCP/IP setting to obtain IP address automatically. Change TCP/IP settings http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-us/help/e070bf7b-6d5e-4f49-b4f7-10aa8d8b11e21033.mspx After that, if the issue still persists, I suggest you collect following information to troubleshoot the problem. 1.Click Start button, type CMD in Start Search bar and press enter. 2.Type IPCONFIG /all and press enter. Please copy the results and paste them to the forum. Thank you for your cooperation. Hope it helps.

Thanks for your help. I tried the first thing, doing a restore point first, just in case. Because we have Roadrunner, I unplugged the router & unplugged the R.R. to reboot the system. Still nothing. But I lost my internet connection to my desktop in the process. So I am not really sure where I stand with it now.I had to disconnect the router completely from my desktop to use it. The guy from Time Warner said he could see the router & my computer though. I can't copy/paste the other info as the laptop is not online. I can type the info in if you tell me what I'm looking for. Thanks again.

Same with the Wireless network connection. ipconfig/release & flushdns both say The requested operation requires elevation. Should I try hooking up the router again?

Hi Sherri, Did you received any information about IPv4 Address, subnet mask, DHCP server and DNS servers after running IPCONFIG /all? If so, please let me know the detail information. Thank you for your cooperation.

I just finally got it up & running! When I tell you what I think was wrong... you won't believe it. Most laptops have a switch for online/offline. This one does not. There is a key on the keyboard that turns this function on & off, F2. When it updated last week, that function never turned back on. In trying to fix it, I made it worse. After I hit F2 & Fn keys, I did a system restore to Dec. 4th. It actually worked & is online wirelessly now! I can't thank you enough for all your help. I will NOT be applying for a job with the geek squad anytime soon. That was so frustrateing! Again, I appreciate all your help. Sherri
