critical SMB-2 vulnerability for Windows 7 RC
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/975497.mspx According to Microsoft, an SMB-2 vulnerability leaves Windows 7 RC open to remote-execution attacks. What's worse is that Microsoft's advisory prominently lists Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit) as NON-affected software (and their automated fix-it tool refuses to run under Windows 7). But buried in the advisory's FAQ is this statement: > Is the Windows 7 Release Candidate affected by this vulnerability?> Yes. This vulnerability was reported after the release of Windows 7 Release Candidate. Customers >runningthis platform are encouragedto review this advisory and follow the steps listed here. Apparently, Microsoft is more concerned about avoiding bad publicity for Windows 7 than it is about notifying millions of RC users about a critical security flaw. Unless you read the security advisory in its entirety, you will be falsely assured that the problem does NOT affect Windows 7 (even though it DOES affect the RC).

Yep, why cant they include win7 RC in the affected systems table on the page? Makes no sense... Just to let you know, someone already beat you in posting about this issue, Oh, ok, thanks. (I searched for SMB before I posted, but the previous thread didn't mention SMB in its subject line, so it didn't show up in my search.)

You're welcome, thanks for taking the time to post about the issue though! (it seems you never can find the posts you are looking for...) I think you explained it better than the OP of the other thread did...Hello! Update: The automated fix-it tool reported runs under Windows 7 RC if you use compatibility mode. Or you can just edit the registry by hand.
