dns server not responding while connected directly to modem or router
after moving, i started having issues connected to wifi networks with a netgear wireless n adapter, i apologize in advance because my phone will not type numbers on forums, but would connect fine via wired. as of three days ago, i get the error, dns server not responding, even when plugged directly into the modem. my roommate has no problems on his win seven netbook so im at a loss. reset my winsocks, ipconfig release, flushed dns cache, reinstalled drivers. if anyone has any clue, i would greatly appreciate the help.

Will most likely need for you to post the output of IPCONFIG /ALL when connected wired and wireless for comparison. Also, check your firewall settings and make sure you dont have something in place preventing you from outbound connectivity.Visit: anITKB.com, an IT Knowledge Base.

I agree with [JM], To make sure that your local firewall is not causing the problem, disable it and check the result. If all is okay if the firewall is down, you can proceed by two ways to solve your problem: 1- Allow outcoming packets to the DNS port (53) 2- Reset the default firewall settings. This is a link about how to reset the default firewall settings: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Restore-Windows-Firewall-settings Best regards.

i can assure my dns was not hardcoded before the move. as for the ipconfig results, i will post those as soon as my roomate allows me to use his laptop because im listing this post on my droid and for some reason, am not allowed to type numbers or else i would type out the results. thankyou all for your responses and i will be posting back in the morning with the results. also would clearing my dns cache remove any chance of a hard coded dns causing thbe problem?
August 21st, 2010 7:30am

Clearing the DNS cache will remove the cached DNS records. I recommand to you to use the nslookup utility (as an example you can use this command nslookup www.facebook.com) and check if you are able to do some resolutions (I mean there is an IP address which is returned). If yes, it may be wrong DNS records in the cache that caused the problem and in this case clearing your DNS cache will solve your problem. If no, be sure that it is not a problem of DNS cache and you have a problem to reach the DNS server. Best regards.

As I see here, you are using the Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection. According to what is mentioned in your previous reply, there is no DNS server with IPv4 address mentioned. To solve your problem, proceed like that: 1- Disable IPv6 (I recommand it to you) 2- Specify manually your DNS server. Best regards.

I noticed that DHCP is not enabled as the system was assigned an APIPA address. "Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.227.223(Preferred)" <--- APIPA As some were saying you will need to go into the network adapter configuration and select "use these settings" not the autoconfiguration. I agree with Angry CPU, I had forgot this. To make sure that your client computer is able to take a DHCP address with the use of a DHCP server, proceed like that: 1- click on start, run and write services.msc 2- make sure that DHCP client service is started automatically. If all is okay with the client computer, check that the DHCP service is enabled on the router. You can also manually configure that: 1- Specify an Ip address for the client computer 2- Specify the mask 3- Specify the IP address of the default gateway 4- Specify at least one DNS server (A second one is optional) This should solve your problem. Best regards.
August 21st, 2010 7:04pm

Just to add as an information, if your client computer config is okay and it does not receive a dynamic Ip address, you can use the command ipconfig /renew to obtain an IP address from the DHCP server. Best regards.

I disabled ipv6 on both wired and wireless connections with no success. I specified a DNS server in the router and set that on both connections' ipv4 as well as the router ip and subnet mask. I did not, however, change the default gateway because none was displayed in the router and I could not find a way to manually set one. DHCP is enabled on both client network connections and in the router as well but ipconfig /renew did not resolve my problem. I'm still having issues just connecting to the router via the wireless connection. When connecting, it returns "connection attempt failed" after only a few seconds. I don't think this is a related issue because I was having this problem before I got "DNS server not responding" errors. Possible router failure so I reset the router settings to factory defaults and that did not work. I then specified the ip, subnet mask, and DNS server on the router and still got no results. New symptoms: My roommates laptop no longer has internet access when connected to the router and only accesses when plugged directly into the modem. this is true for both factory defaults on the router and after I specified the settings. He sure isn't going to happy when he gets home :) Any other ideas or am I just missing something?

Okay, after manually specifying the IP address and the mask, try to send a ping request to the router so that you check if it is able to respond you or not. (Use this command: ping ip_address_of_the_router) If you don't receive a response from the router, these are the possible causes: 1- Your IP configuration wrong 2- You have a problem with the used cable 3- You have a problem with the router (It may be that it is broken or things like that) 4- Your internal firewall is blocking the traffic (If it the case by disabling it the router will respond you) Check what I mentioned and give me the results. Best regards.

ping was succesful
August 21st, 2010 8:34pm

OK, so the router is responding. We are going to try this thing: we will try to ping the bing website with its ip address and check if it is responding or not. Try to ping to 213.155.157.33 (IP address of bing website now) and tell me what is the result. If you have a problem to ping bing website, try to ping facebook (Use this IP address 66.220.153.15) Tell me what is the result. Best regards.

Okay as I see, now you've got a problem with the router not with your client computers. The router is unable to send packets to the wanted destinations. Check with your ISP provider. You've got a problem with your router now. Best regards.

is there something that would have caused thefailed ping attempt when im plugged directly into my cable modem?
August 21st, 2010 11:26pm

The only thing I can think of is have all hardware in place as desired. Then reset the router, log onto the router and make sure DHCP is enabled. If it does not have that option, it should, but you can manually edit the IPv4 adapter properties if it comes to that. I agree with MS helper, the issue is falling at the router.John Wiley

Good news. For the router, check that he has an ip address on its external interface (which connect the router to the internet). Check also that all the packets (0.0.0.0) on your router are forwarded to the correct router. It may be a route configuration issue. For the new router, are you able to get an IP address from the DHCP service?
August 22nd, 2010 1:47am

I cannot get anything but 0.0.0.0 when I released and renewed the DHCP servie on the router. I then set the start ip and dns servers i get when my pc is plugged directly to the modem and ipconfig is run and still no luck.

Even if you set manually the correct settings on the computer, this will not solve your problem because your client computer is sending internet packets to the router but the router is not able to forward them. This is, as I think, due to a problem in the routing table of the router. To solve this problem, you should, like I told you, see with your ISP because there something wrong with the router and not with the client computer. Sorry, but this is not a Microsoft problem. The issues with the router are the following: -Problem with its DHCP service -Problem with its routing table If there is any advance with your ISP, please let me know so that we will check if there is any problems with the client computer. Best regards.

WHen I set the start ip and dns servers, I meant that I manually set them in the router, not the client pc if that changes anything btw
August 22nd, 2010 7:44pm

Ah okay. Here we are trying manual config on the client computer so even if you specify these parameters it will change nothing (You still have a problem with the DHCP service and now our priority is to have an access to internet with a static or dynamic address. Once you can have access, we will look to the DHCP service. Like I told you, the router is unable to forward your internet packets to the ISP router or is unable to receive packets from internet. It is for that, I told you check with you ISP. Just to explain to you how you can browse on internet: 1- You want to display a web page 2- You internet traffic will be sent to your router 3- Your router will forward these packets to the ISP router 4- The ISP router will route the packets to the right destination 5- The responce return to the ISP router 6- The ISP router will send the response to your router 7- Your router will send the response to your client computer So, if your router is not configured to route packets to the ISP router you will not be able to browse and the same thing if the ISP router if it is not able to send the response to your router. As you see we have destionation unreachable message from the router which means that the router found a problem to send these packets to the correct destionation (It is not a DNS problem, it is route problem). Check with your ISP and tell me what they told you. The problem is with the router: there is something blocking the outcoming or the incoming traffic. Best regards.

Bypassing the router works. There is a problem with router config. Best regards.
August 22nd, 2010 8:42pm

Hello rawr networks are pain, Please follow these steps exactly. If your modem has a configuration reset page, please reset it. Otherwise, leave it off for 5 minutes, and turn it on with your laptop connected. Do ipconfig /all and note down the DNS servers and default gateway. Not reset the settings on your router. Make sure the cable is connected to the WAN port on the router. Manually enter in the DNS servers and the default gateway. Now turn off both the cable modem and router. Then start the cable router and wait for it to connect. Then turn on the router. It should work. Tell me your luck with these steps.
