ethernet controller shuts down
I just purchased a MSI 790fx-gd70 last night. Everything works fine but the ethernet ports. Here is the best way I can describe it. When intial bootup the lights on the ethernet port are on (Green and orange). Once it gets to the windows splash screen it shuts off, as in no lights or nothing. When I go to device manager it shows both ports as not working properly as the drivers were not loaded. I have download and installed drivers from the MSI web site. The used the drivers from the cd that came with the motherboard. Even trien manually installing by selecting from the windows system. But every time I do I get a message that windows failed to install the driver OR one that says the parameter is incorrect. I even tried installing a wireless usb dongle but when I try and install the driver I get a message that says "The requested operation requires elevation." I do not know for sure but aI believe something is disabling the device somewhere. I checked in the bios and all the ethernet controllers are set to enable. I even tried clearing the bios but the same thing keeps happening when it goes to the splash screen. Please any help.

Are you able to post a image screenshot of the above description showing the device manager? And what makes you think that the shutdown has to do with the ethernet just b'cos there's no light or whatever? Btw did you assemble this rig yourself and did you try installing win 7 with the it's default driver rather than using the drivers CD and see how it goes

I would post a screen shot but I do not see how to attach the picture with the reply. Yes I tried installing the win 7 default driver and it says the parameter is incorrect. also says windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. realtek pcie gbe family controller. yes i did install it. everything worked fine with my last mobo. I just guessed that something is shutting down the ethernet controller since no lights come on at the ports at all once it loads past the splash screen. I have tried both ethrenet ports and nothing hapens. But the do light up until it gets past the splash screen.

Care to clarify how you install the win 7 default driver? Is during the process/setup and fresh install of win 7? Did you somehow OC the rig and have you check the processor temp ensuring is not due to it

If you still encounter the same problem, install the ethernet driver from here

Thanks. Kinda wierd, there's no installer in that folder. Tell you what, download the driver mean for vista and run it under vista compatible mode in win 7 and next run as adminstrator Here the download link

Still get the parameter is incorrect. I got so frustrated that I took the mobo back and exchanged it. Guess what? exact same messages as the other so I can rule out bad i/o board. I did disable one port in the bios and tried it this way. When I did this time the activity light stays on but I can not install the driver. Even tried the wireless card again and I get the message that parameter is incorrect. The bios version is current on the new board out of the box. Tried running a virus scan and everything came back clean. Now since I can not connect to the internet my copy of windows went to being not genuine. Uuuugggghhhh.

Got it fixed. Did the upgrade option of windows 7 to reinstall so I did not have to lose any programs and that fixed it. Thanks Dan for all your help.
