explorer.exe hangs when opening file/folder on network share
HiI'm experiencing a pretty strange problem, where explorer.exe hangs when I open any file or folder on a network share, opening the share itself works without a problem. This occurs on two different Vista clients. It doesn't matter if the share's mapped as drive, or accessed via IP-Address, UNC-path or FQDN. Access to the same share from an XP-Client works flawlessly. After I've opened a file or folder on the share, I can see the FOLDER (eg. G:\share) in the "Open file" column of the Shared Folders snap-in on the server. When I close this "open file", explorer on the client unfreezes and opens the folder without aproblem! This thenrepeats itself again for each different folder I open...Copying a file to/from the shareexhibits the exact same phenomenon, as soon as I close the open file entry for the directory on the server, it starts copying.Infrastructure is Vista Business x64 accessing a Share on the 2003 Server, both joined to the same domain in 2003 native mode(Fileserver is the DC).I've tried every suggestion I could find, namely:- Experimented with different authentication settings on the client (NTLM, NTLM2, etc)- Disabled Autotuning- Disabled Offline-Files- Did a clean Re-installof the clientabout 4 timesI'm thankful for any suggestions, as this is effectively preventing me from using Vista.Michael

Yes,norouters inbetween, they'reconnected via a GigE switch. TCP/IP config is perfectly fine.As I've mentioned, the same machine with an XPinstalled works flawlessly...I did even change the NIC in the client machine - installed an Intel PCI-e NICinstead of the onboard Marvell (in case it was a driver issue of some kind) -> no luck.

Hi Michael, As for this process hangs issue, we generally need to analyze the performance monitor logs and memory dump files to locate the root cause. Unfortunately, debugging is beyond what we can do in the forum because of the nature of forum support. I'd like to recommend that you contact Microsoft Customer Support Service (CSS) for assistance so that this problem can be resolved efficiently. To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a look at the web site listed below: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;PHONENUMBERS If you are outside the US please see http://support.microsoft.com/ for regional support phone numbers. Having said that, I'd still like to provide the following analysis and basic troubleshooting steps to see if we can eliminate this problem: 1. Please make sure that all the updates for Windows Vista have been applied. If not, please use Windows Update to install them. 2. Please try to logon the domain with a new account to see if it works. 3. Please let me know which version your Windows Vista is, retail version of OEM one? And how did you reinstall Windows Vista, with a system restore partition or just a clean install? Did it work once after it was reinstalled? 4. Please let me know if this sharing is a DFS Share or a non-DFS Share. If possible, please disable the share and reconfigure the share again. Please also note permissions settings. 5. Please perform a Clean Boot to check the issue. Clean boot ================= 1) Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Search box, and then press Enter.Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window. 2) Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3) Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK. NOTE: we can go back to normal boot by running msconfig again and checking on Normal Startup in the General tab. In the Clean Boot Environment, the third party services and applications are disabled, please check if the issue reoccurs at this time. If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related to one application or service we have disabled. You may use the MSCONFIG tool again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to find out the culprit. However, if the issue still persists, please also collect the following information for our further research: 1. Use ListDLLs Utility to gather the information about which DLLs are loaded with the explorer.exe: 1) Please download ListDLLs Utility on the following web page: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896656.aspx 2) After downloading, extract the file to C:\Temp\ListDlls. 3) Click the Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. We can also click Start, type cmd (without quotations in the Search box, and right click on the cmd.exe and click Run as administrator. 4) In the Command Prompt, type "cd C:\Temp\ListDlls" (without the quotations) and press Enter. 5) Then type "ListDlls r explorer.exe > C:\Temp\output.txt" (without the quotations) and press Enter. The program will run. After the command finished, please use Windows Live SkyDrive (http://www.skydrive.live.com/) to upload the C:\Temp\output.txt file and then share the URL with me. 2. Please also check the event log to see if there are some related error messages. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT Nicholas Li - MSFT
